I was extremely excited to get an interview with Shopify, it is an organization that I had been curious about and attentive toward for years however was working for another company where my career was doing very well so when it came time to open the door, I was enthusiastic and so incredibly welcoming of this opportunity which I ensured to translate upon the first interaction. Unfortunately from the first "hello" on the recruiter side it became clear that it was going to be a very difficult exchange, something was off and this person was having a BAD day. The invite sent had links for a video / audio link and though the webpage for Shopify clearly states that they do a phone screen first, I went with the flow and fully prepared for the video at the same time. The recruiter was significantly late - did not apologize. She was cold and abrupt from the jump off. I did my best to ask how the day was and how things were going ... busy time of year etc. (as if often the case in HR end of year) and it was a cold brush off with a lot of sighing. (sighing!) I asked if I was in the "correct" video room and was chastised for not following instructions in a curt and condescending tone. I simply said "no problem" I understand from the process it's supposed to be phone only so no issue for me ... the reason I am in the room is because the invite has the link and says to kindly log in. I was met with a sigh, silence ... more silence and a comment about how TODAY it will be phone ONLY, that's that. (???) no apology. I kept it cool and calm though I felt like i was slowly dying inside from complete letdown ... several questions were somewhat unclear in that the recruiter would start with one, got distracted and stopped mid sentence, paused .... sighed ... and would get lost enough to continue with another question ... making a two in one that were unrelated ... took my time to answer both by recapping the question up front I was answering. I provided answers ... one answer was met with a comment unrelated my answer : "I don't even understand why you'd be right for this role ... you are not really HR you are OD... you don't have the background... have you even done HR ... how is this related?!" There was no disguising any form of irritation. I did my best to slalom and swerve the evident mood but at some point ... Nearing the end of the interview I was met with "so in terms of reporting, can't tell you who you will report to or when you / we will know because we just went through / are going through another re-org ... all of HR is impacted so <I> don't even know who <I> will be reporting in to!" I advised that I was sorry to hear about a stressful time and that it was absolutely normal to not have all these details however I hoped I had been able to answer any questions and if there was anything else that I could clarify or delve in to further .... Immediately met with a firm no ... followed by I will get back to you regardless of outcome = you aren't going any further. Won't deny it that in over 15 years of professional experience ... working tirelessly and having all the right drive, ambition and ethics ... I have never - ever been so shocked at the complete and utter disrespect by a Talent finder . I share so that others know... Shopify is currently going through something substantial and if you feel like you were raked through the coals recently ... I feel your pain ... chin up as there seems to be a whole lot of stress coming out from the seams.

Virtual phone screen with a recruiter. Then a follow up interview with the hiring manager to discuss your life story. Recruitment process for screening took longer than the job posting described.

Life story interview with a recruiter. I honestly find this particular interview odd - first, this was my first conversation with anyone at the company and they scheduled this for an hour - seems like not a great use of their time? And then I just talked about my career for almost an hour - didn’t know really what they wanted me to focus on. Felt long winded and overkill. Inserting a bit more focus into the life story seems like it would help everyone. Needless to say I never heard anything back after, not even an email turndown or anything. PSA to employers: candidates remember when they’re treated well as they network with others.
