Simple interview. Was 20 minutes with another recruiter. It was very open-ended which was kind of awkward. There was more time for my questions than theirs. I didn't do well with the dead air time.

This is my opinion...just want to get the legalities out of the way.
15 minutes with recruiting rep and 1 hr with "life" interviewer. All scheduling was done online and the overall experience was great.
The life interview everyone is talking about is nothing more than to compensate for Shopify's lack of people reading skills. I never cared about the interview nor do I need the money. I was a trader/hedge fund manager so I have f.u. money. I wanted to know what this "life" interview was all about so I applied.
The life interviewer was great. She started with the interview by asking me if I read about the life interview Shopify was so famous for. I said, yes.
She asked me to start with my high school years and move forward. I said, with a curious look on my face, "You know, I didn't have a lot of high school experience because I tested out of high school in my sophomore year and went straight to one of the best colleges in the U.S. Let me start when my was 4 YEARS OLD." That's right...I started my life story at 4 YEARS OLD. Hey, if we're going to talk about a candidate's life, lets start early and get into the psychology of it all.
I made sure my life story did not reach my high school years. 40 minutes into the interview, she said I needed to move forward to the present. I wanted to make sure Shopify's life interview was not about the candidate's resume, since they claim to be holistic in their life interview approach. To my dismay, this was not the case.
During the life interview, I covertly cornered the interviewer to see if she had read my resume to verify my work timelines and expertise, and she did. Thus, Shopify's life interviewers, regardless of their claims, do thoroughly know your resume. The life interviewers DO READ YOUR RESUME.
A little tidbit: the interviewer tried to hide her yawning twice by sipping coffee. She wasn't interviewing me...I was interviewing her.
Lastly, the process was efficient and simple and the interviewers were great. But don't believe their life interview hype. It's just another method to compensate for poor people reading skills and not about being holistic or gauging a candidate's passion.
Nothing new or inspiring here. I'm more intrigued with Elon Musk's and Steve Job's interview stories.

Extremely slow process.
After an initial call with HR, the company had no available dates for the next step (coding challenge and life story) for several months out. I followed-up with the HR person and they opened up one appointment for 3 weeks later. If you had a conflict then that’s unfortunate for you because that was the only date/time available.
I withdrew from the process because I received an offer elsewhere before this interview came.

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview process with Shopify. I applied online through the careers section of the website and really took my time with the open response questions. I was contacted within the week to book my first 15-20 phone interview. I was asked a few questions about why I was interested in Shopify and to give an example of a recent challenge I overcame in my role (*hint follow the STAR model-- situation, task, action, results ;)).
I was contacted within a week after that to schedule my life story interview. My interviewer was incredibly thoughtful, patient, and very interested in hearing my unique background. I was prompted to start from high school, though I took my life story back even further to talk about the example my parents set for me, childhood, teenage years, high school, college, and post-grad and weaved a lot of the a-ha moments together that I feel shaped the person I am today. I felt very relaxed, heard, and seen.
Within about 2 weeks after this, I was asked to schedule my final interview: 2 back-to-back interviews with the Team Leads (the managerial position for which the position I'm applying for would report to). We went through situational questions and a deep dive of my resume, finding where my experience and values align with the company, mission, and position. There were a few questions that were a bit left field that I was unprepared for and did my best to show them my thought process, though was honest about where my knowledge of the industry/role fell short. I think I recovered pretty well, and would rate my confidence at an 8/10 after that interview. 2 weeks later, I was invited back to do another round of the final interview with different Team Leads. I studied very hard for this one and did my fair share of research on the questions/topics I fell a bit short of the first time around. The final, final interview went super well, it felt more casual, and about a week later, I received a phone call notifying me of a verbal offer, final offer pending conversations with my references :)
Overall super pleased with the experience, I felt it was very fair, thorough, and holistic. I could feel the strong employee-centric culture this organization has, and that was really important to me in my job search.

First interview was a conversation about my background/work experience/interest in Shopify. Second interview was a technical interview: in the first half, you find solutions for two simultaneous IM chats. Second half is a phone call where the interviewer plays the role of a customer with an issue. Third interview was the offer.
They recommend building your own storefront in preparation for the technical interview, which helped a lot. The phone call in particular was less about providing a straight forward answer (i.e. how to shut their store down,) and more about asking questions about the client, and trying to find a solution that would encourage them to stay. After both components of the technical interview, the interviewer asks what your thoughts were on the process, and how you feel you performed and what you would do differently, if anything.

Interview process was around a month long, and consisted of the standard recruiter, life story, and team lead interviews. Questions were extremely easy and not detailed, and the interviewers were easily impressed.
I have over 5 years of experience of account management experience and an advanced degree, so even though salary was not discussed, it seemed obvious someone with my background would expect commensurate compensation. HR had been a mess the entire time, and informed me I would be receiving an offer after they vetting my references. They then extended me an offer that was below my salary from before receiving my advanced degree... literally the paygrade of an entry level position. I have to wonder why they feel the need to vet references for such a loy paying job. The HR person was extremely rude throughout the process, and told me that she would work on seeing if the offer could be raised. 45 minutes later I received an email rescinding my offer. So unprofessional and petty, but I also just think they're completely delusional about American salary expectations. They're a growing company, I don't see why they're so stingy, or at least why no one figured out I was way over qualified before wasting everyones time...
