The first thing to say is that the interviews at Tesco are different depending upon which store you applied to. I applied to 2 express stores, Rayners Lane and Watford Langley, for the same position and they both asked different questions. I got a phone call from both stores about a week after filling out the online application. At Watford Langley, I was asked more generic interview questions and the manager did not seem to record my answers in writing (in front of me at least), whereas at Rayners Lane, I was asked scripted questions which the manager read off of a sheet and recorded my answers on front of me. However, both stores asked me to do a 'work sample', which is where you stock some shelves to see what it would be like to work as a customer assistant whilst a staff member checks in on you from time to time. I was unclear if how you do in the work sample contributes to whether you get the job or not, but the manager at Watford Langley said that she would talk to her colleagues to see how I got on during the work sample, whereas the manager at Rayners Lane said nothing about the work sample. Don't be afraid to ask questions of the floor staff whilst doing the work sample (I asked quite a few). Both managers were very nice and the interviews were very informal (I would still wear a shirt though), which put me at ease as I was a bit nervous going in. The manager at Rayners Lane said that he would be in touch within 7 days (I had the interview 2 days ago), so I haven't heard anything from him yet. The manager at Watford Langley didn't say when she would be in touch, but she phoned me about 6 hours later and offered me the job, which I accepted. I would also recommend having some questions prepared to ask them (I asked 4) as it shows an interest in the role. The questions I asked:
What are the 'Buy as you Earn' and 'Save as you Earn' schemes?
How is the annual bonus awarded?
What is the overtime like here?
Do you get busy at christmas?
I didn't ask hardly any questions whilst during the interview at Rayners Lane, so perhaps this is why I haven't been contacted as of yet?
'Describe a situation where you have had to do something that made you uncomfortable.' However, when I couldn't ask this question the manager swapped it for 'Describe a time where you had to adapt your behaviour for a certain group of people or a certain situation.'
