      Entretien

It seems they have multiple positions with the company going through its "digital transformation" phase (trying to adopt tech PM culture). Call with the recruiter, who was a wonderful person to talk and communicate with. Second stage - prompt homework: Over the last several years, there has been evolution in the payments space. GEICO is looking to adopt a best-in-class payments experience. Please provide a writeup discussing how you would approach discovery, including your process, as well as your recommendation. You have about a week to complete and send the document. First problem - since they don't have a good Product Management knowledge, the review of the document is through the eyes of non-product people... Second, this document is going to decide which level you will be offered if you complete the process. Third stage - discussion with the hiring manager. It seems that the hiring manager knew very little about Product Management and 25 minutes into the call was already out of questions to ask (the call was scheduled for 45min) Nothing major on the questions - only about products you owned in the past. After the review of the prompt document the team decided to offer a lower position than the one I applied for, so I decided to decline. This is the first time in my entire 20 years career a company offers to demote my application. It seems the team lack the most important thing a Product Management team needs - empathy! If someone is not fit for a specific position, just reject their application, and thank them for their time, there is no need to tell people there is no "fit" by telling them "You are not good enough to this role, so here is a lower-level role for you". I would highly recommend staying away from the GEICO Product team!
