      Entretien

Recruiter reached out to me after a career fair and set up a phone interview with 2 members of the design team at Booking. Prior to the call, they asked me to be prepared with 2 changes to the website I would propose changing, along with the solution as to how I would do so. I ending up sending a five page document full of items I felt could be addressed, just on the homepage. They do a lot of A/B testing, so most of the changes were already resolved or changed by the time of my interview. The initial phone call lasted about 30 minutes, where we spoke about the website changes, they quizzed me on some CSS rules, and spoke about what it was like to work at Booking. About a week later, the recruiter got back to me and invited me to Amsterdam to visit the offices and interview further, with all expenses paid. On the day of my visit, I took park it 2 hour long interviews back to back. During the first hour, a couple team members reviewed my website changes again, and quizzed me further on CSS rules (especially absolute positioning). The second hour consisted of a whiteboard session with 2 different team members, where I was asked to design an ATM. After the first 2 interview sessions went well, they sat me with a product manager to talk about the business side of booking. Due to the intense A/B testing nature of Booking, every small change is made to ensure more bookings per second. This team member wanted to gauge my understanding of business goals. About a week later I got a call with an offer, which I ultimately declined due the salary not being competitive with similar positions in the US. Booking relies heavily on the draw of living in the city of Amsterdam, with the belief you'll take less to do so.
