Choosing a career when you’ve moved to another country can be overwhelming. A good first step is to investigate which professions are considered best, and Canadian Business magazine recently ranked police officer as one of “The Top 25 Jobs in Canada.” There are, however, several myths around the requirements of becoming a police officer. Let’s get to the truth. Myth 1: “I need to be fluent in French” You need only be fluent in English or French. Myth 2: “I’m not tall enough” In Canada, height doesn’t matter as long as it doesn’t impede your physical exam. Myth 3: “I need to have an athletic build” You don’t need to have a particular body type. Passing the physical exam is what’s required. Myth 4: “I’m too old” There is no maximum age; only a minimum age of 18/19. Myth 5: “I need to have a degree in Criminology” This is a plus, but the only education requirement is completion of high school and, in some cases, a minimum of 30 credits at a post-secondary institution. This week: Ali Abrahim, Senior Client Service Manager. How many titles have you had at Paladin? I started in October 2012 as a security officer at an oil and gas site. In early 2013, I filled in for an acting team-lead position and was promoted as the lead for another team. A year after that, I was promoted to the site supervisor position. In August 2016, I was offered the town client service manager position, and in November 2018 I was made Senior Client Service Manager for all Fort McMurray operations. When you started, were you aware of Paladin’s promote-from-within philosophy? During my hiring interview, HR asked where I saw myself in five years. I said, “I’d like to be the manager.” She smiled and said it’s very possible. How did you decide you wanted to move up in the company? Becoming team lead really made me look at security as a career, not just a job. I had a lot of help and mentoring.

Police academy training takes a great deal of discipline and dedication, but nothing worth having comes easy. This week: Candace Skinner, Security Programs Manager. Candace Skinner joined the Paladin Family in July 2013 after moving to Victoria, B.C. Starting on overnight shifts at a local grocery store, she went on to earn a full-time schedule at the Royal BC Museum, where she trained on the control desk. In 2015, Candace was promoted to Assistant Supervisor at the Museum. A year and a half following that, while still serving as assistant supervisor, she started as a trainer for the Victoria Branch, where she became certified in CPI and MOAB. When Candace first joined Paladin, she wasn't aware of the company's promotion from within policy. However, upon learning about it, she began using her 30-minute breaks to learn more about the control desk and completed LMS courses to help improve her knowledge, later earning her a well-deserved promotion. Her advice to others is to believe in themselves.
