🎉 We’re delighted to share that the Boleside Footbridge, a former railway structure within our Historic Railways Estate, has been shortlisted for a National Railway Heritage Award! 🔧 Located in Galalshiels in the Scottish borders, the footbridge was closed in early 2020 before being reopened last year after some much needed care and repair. 🌉 The Awards recognise best practice in the re-use, restoration and continued upkeep of our rich heritage of railway and tramway buildings and structures. 👏 It’s brilliant to see the work and dedication of our team and Balfour Beatty plc being acknowledged. ℹ️ You can learn more about the footbridge’s rich heritage here https://lnkd.in/eZqrJKAJ

Last week, we were crowned the winner of The Gatsby T Level Employer of the Year Award at the West Midlands National Apprenticeship and #SkillsAwards2024. Wildflowers along a motorway make journeys prettier, and they're vital for biodiversity. Partnering with The Wildlife Trusts we're using remote controlled technology to make the work of cultivating wildflower meadows along Lancashire's roadsides more efficient. These "robot cutters" (not its official name) cut old wildflowers that have dropped their seeds, and remove the cuttings. 🌱 This work will ensure the soil has the right nutrients, allowing wildlife and biodiversity to thrive in the meadow for years to come! 🌼 The meadows have been funded using our Designated Funds scheme. ℹ️ For more information on our Designated Funds visit https://lnkd.in/eWXNFEaV

This National Customer Service Week, I’m proud to reflect on our health, safety, and wellbeing team's vital work at National Highways. Their efforts ensure we make the right safety decisions, enhancing the experience for road users. A highlight this year has been the rollout of our Be the Change programme, fostering conversations about safety, both mental and physical, that enable us to provide top-notch service year-round. By prioritising health and wellbeing, we’re committing to improving decision-making and ensuring safer outcomes for our customers, while empowering our team to be their best selves every day. #NCSW2024 #CustomerFirst #MakingADifference #SafetyFirst #WellbeingAtWork
It's only a week until Highways UK, the largest roads sector exhibition in the country. As in previous years, we will be there and we can't wait to see you. Visitors can hear from our senior leaders, find out more about some of our safety initiatives, our environmental work and much more. The event is free to attend, so if you haven't got your ticket yet, there's still time to book your spot. See you there!
Using innovation to manage hazards and keep road users safe is at the centre of what we do. That’s why, after sifting through some 50 applications, we will be working with six small or medium enterprises who have pitched some innovative ideas to keep our roads safe. 📱 Esitu Solutions will be developing a virtual reality training course as a downloadable app for the Meta Quest headset to promote safer and more considerate driving. For those wanting to experience some of their virtual reality technology, Esitu Solutions will be on our stand for Highways UK 2024! 📞 VESOS Solutions Ltd has developed TeCall to harvest eCall data automatically sent after collisions or breakdowns. ⛐ VivaCity sensors provide data on hazardous interactions between road users (near misses), enabling safety teams to understand the causation of conflicts and collisions and enable better and more timely interventions to be planned. ⚠️ Roadside Technologies Ltd is developing an automated hazardous object detection solution using the latest in sensing technology, to improve road user safety and enable smoother journeys through temporary work zones on roads. 🛑 CrossTech has developed a stopped vehicle detection verification system. ⏱️ Valerann’s real-time road data analytics platform enables proactive management of incidents and risks on the road. Between now and November, the six finalists will deliver their ideas in trials working with National Highways and its supply chain.
