We are thrilled to be included among global sustainability leaders in the 2022 Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the second consecutive year. This index tracks performance of the top 20% of the 600 largest North American companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, assessing issues such as climate change management, supply chain standards, and labor practices. We are committed to continuing our goal of building a more sustainable future for our community, and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts in S&P Global's Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA).
When we launch product changes, we’re typically pretty jazzed about the impact it could have for our buyers and sellers. This is particularly true at Etsy because what we decide to deploy at scale has often undergone a wide array of successful experiments. So how do we then ensure that we are not being overly optimistic about the anticipated impact? In our recent Code As Craft blog post by Senior Data Scientist, Stephane Shao, we share how Etsy makes use of Bayesian statistics to combat this so-called “winner’s curse,” allowing us to better estimate the effects of our experiments.
Our CDMX employees manifested their best year yet with a vision board party! As true creatives at heart, we used stickers and other crafty materials to create collages displaying professional and personal intentions for the year. As a sweet bonus, our employees noshed on Rosca de Reyes from favorite local bakeries, Panadería Rosetta and Pantricia. This traditional bready dessert is often enjoyed by family and friends in Mexico after the holidays, and these treats did not disappoint! Here’s to a creative and successful 2023! ✨

At Etsy, teams manage their own online #experiments to inform product decisions. This reduces dependencies and bottlenecks between teams, enabling autonomous and faster decision-making. However, it also makes the collective impact of product launches more challenging to estimate. In this recent Code As Craft blog post by Senior Data Scientists, Stephane Shao and Clare Burke, we talk about how Etsy reconciles this desire for velocity and autonomy with a holistic accounting of experiments.
Throughout the year we’ve partnered with multiple organizations that bring together exceptional technical talent and celebrate diversity in tech. From meeting so many incredible Black technologists at /dev/color to connecting and collaborating with talented Mexico-based engineers at Talent-Network's conference – we’re grateful for all the connections and impact we’ve made across the board. Round of applause 👏👏 to all our employees who traveled near and far to share their Etsy experiences and how we remain committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce. Take a look at the memorable moments we made during our time at dev color in motion ‘22, Talent Land, Lesbians Who Tech & Allies SF Summit, and Dublin Tech Summit.
Our Etsy offices around the globe are buzzing with holiday cheer and festivities. In Dublin, our colleagues kicked off the holidays with their annual tradition of wreath-making! They gathered to decorate wreaths with natural materials provided by one of our local greenery vendors, Indoor Plant Store. To continue the holiday jubilee, employees also took part in a community hour where they hosted a trivia competition, accompanied by delicious treats and festive drinks. What a creative and crafty way to celebrate the season!
“I remember when I brought a decision to a couple of my VPs about a month ago. I spent 90 minutes defending that decision and I loved it! I thought that’s exactly how it should be. Once a decision is made, everyone is on board. But they're okay to challenge it. And I think it makes us better. It makes me better.” Our outgoing CTO, Mike Fisher, recently joined Ben Henley-Smith Henley-Smith on the Best Work podcast to discuss why Etsy's engineering culture takes an “accountability communities” approach to work and how it leads to high performance. He also shares more about his leadership skills, how he challenges himself and his peers, along with why scrutiny is important to his work. Listen in to learn more!
Etsy is proud to be an on-ramp to economic opportunity for millions of entrepreneurs, including communities that face higher barriers to starting a business. Our teams headed to Washington, D.C. this week for a chance to talk with policymakers about what matters to micro businesses and celebrate makers across the country, with a special spotlight on the Gee’s Bend Quilters. Rep. Terri Sewell of Alabama welcomed quilters Claudia Pettway Charley, Stella Mae Pettway, and Doris Pettway Hacketts on Capitol Hill to share their entrepreneurial journeys through Etsy’s Uplift Makers Program, an initiative that opens doors to ecommerce for historic artisan communities facing economic hardships, in partnership with nonprofit Nest . Etsy Admin, along with CEO Josh Silverman and COO Raina Moskowitz, gathered with the quilters and the D.C. community for “The Fabric of our Hometowns,” an event celebrating the quilters and all the creative entrepreneurs who fuel our vibrant communities with their crafts. Thanks for the warm welcome, D.C.!
Connection and creativity are vital components of our culture here at Etsy. One way we foster this within our workplace — virtually or in the office— is through our fun community hour events! This time around, our colleagues in Dublin tapped into their inner artist talents to create a painting of the Samuel Beckett bridge, an iconic landmark in Ireland's capital city. Isn’t their artwork beautiful? Thank you to our Workplace team for organizing and to Paint by the Pints for instructing a step-by-step class in creating these masterpieces!
