Staying on top of the tricks of the trade has become increasingly complicated for media buyers. Many factors make it difficult to maintain an updated knowledge base in the industry—from the emphasis on programmatic buying and self-service ad tech solutions, to the ever-changing nature of the advertising landscape.

“Ask Chicago tech workers about 2020 and you’ll hear about the challenges of navigating work from home and the “new normal.” However, you’re also just as likely to hear stories about teams stepping up to support each other and their customers, and individual accounts of personal and professional growth. That’s because Chicago tech is filled with companies whose cultures and teams are built to come together and thrive under pressure. We recently sat down with employees at 11 such companies — all of which are hiring — to learn how their unique cultures enabled them to tackle unprecedented challenges and grow as people and professionals.” Centro’s company culture in one word: “Systemic,” Jeff Smith, director of product operations, said. “… I think it’s an underappreciated value. Culture requires reinforcement and structure to reproduce consistently… Centro’s culture is built into the DNA of our organization and guides everything from our onboarding to how we celebrate victories and handle adversity.”
Accomplished tech leader, speaker, and author Jeffery Smith joins the podcast to discuss finding new ways to grow during COVID-19, what authentic tech leadership looks like, and how to not let the pandemic—or your mindset—hold you back from career growth.

Centro spent five years improving the company, spending more than $100 million to rebuild its software. It bought a DSP and then launched a new platform about three years ago. “It was a difficult five years,” said Shawn Riegsecker, CEO and founder of Centro. “Q1 of this year, everything’s running clean and then COVID hits. We needed to reset and rethink everything. I had to rip $21 million from the cost based on the new budget.”
"After successive years of double-digit growth, Centro, a digital advertising software company, expected more of the same in 2020. Marketers and their agencies were spending heavily through the Chicago-based company’s digital buying platform and relied on company employees to help execute their buys. The partnerships were fueled by a near-weekly parade of face-to-face industry events. When COVID hit, the events, travel and entertainment industries stopped spending overnight. Like so many others, Centro’s Chief Marketing Officer Katie Risch was forced to regroup." Read more (subscription).
