      Entretien pour Senior Software Developer

J'ai postulé via la recommandation d'un employé. Le processus a pris 2 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez Wealthsimple (Toronto, ON) en oct. 2018

      Entretien

The interview process took about 2 weeks and consisted of 3 stages - short telephone interview, live coding session and then a half-day series of sessions at the WS office. The half-day sessions were made up of 2 coding sessions, 1 system-design exercise and a more general chat. It was a very daunting prospect but everyone I spoke to was friendly, helpful and happy to give you a nudge in the right direction rather than being silent and intimidating. I liked that each session was with different members of the team giving me plenty of opportunities to get different perspectives on working for WS (for the record, everyone was very positive!). Throughout the whole process, I felt like WS were genuinely interested in getting to know me and what I was looking for, as much as I was interested in getting to know WS. In the end, I was offered a different role from the one I originally applied for but that was no bad thing as I felt like they took my abilities and career aspirations into account.

I’ll preface this by saying I had a good experience for the first 3 interviews, it was just the final round one that put a bad taste in my mouth and ruined the whole experience. It was a pretty fast process overall. First round: met with the hiring manager to learn about the team and go over my background and experience. I got a good impression. He said the recruiter would be in touch soon to schedule the next interviews. Second interview: bring your own system. This went well but it required a lot of prep work. Make sure you know how the system was designed to handle failure cases. Third round: coding problem, 3 levels. Not too difficult algorithmic-wise. It was more about structuring the code well. I recommend practicing Leetcode a bit but also class implementations. These two interviews were back-to-back and I got an email that I moved on less than an hour after. Fourth round: “topgrade” interview. I put it in quotes because it wasn’t actually a topgrade interview, more so a past technical experience and behavioural interview. The hiring manager from before was there, plus another manager. The HM was pleasant, but it was this other manager who was rude and condescending and ruined the process for me. It felt like he was trying to re-evaluate my technical abilities despite me having already passed the technical rounds. I highly suspect it’s because I’m a woman. His closing line was to tell me that they are interviewing other candidates in the loop but that the recruiter will be in touch. Why bring up other candidates? I left the interview feeling extremely put off. It’s very unfortunate because like I said, I felt good about the company and process before that interview, even if they seemed a bit too AI-pilled. And for what it’s worth, I did have one woman interviewer in each of the technical rounds, so it’s not a company-wide problem.

A strange experience, the Engineering Manager was clearly not paying attention and, I'm guessing, using an AI listener to come up with follow-up questions. Very standard situational questions but then would pause for about 30 seconds and ask a follow up that was not related to my answer. I pulled out after that stage - for me it's not a great indication of an engineer culture but I do very much like the company.

Typical 5-round gauntlet style interview. Started with 2 coding rounds, then behaviour, then systems and then a chat with HR to negotiate salary. Declined the offer since the salary was significantly lower than companies of similar level.
