      Entretien

A mess. I had 16 one-on-one meetings. There was no rhyme or reason to this interview at all. I had phone interviews, video interviews, onsite interviews (where I was interviewed back to back mostly via video) then back to phone, and video. I interviewed with HR, junior folks, senior folks, people who had nothing to do with the role whatsoever, then back to HR, senior folks, junior folks, etc. I interviewed several times with the same people. I was asked the same questions over and over. And over. It was clear that several people had not heard of me or seen my resume right until our meeting and had no idea what this was all about. Then at the end of each of these 16 sessions I had to come up with some clever and thoughtful questions to ask and write 16 unique thank yous. This made no sense. No one was empowered to make a decision so I was punted from one person who had no say to another person who also had no say, back to someone else who had no say in the hire. It was also awkward to interview with people this role would supervise and/or replace, and I had 7 or 8 such meetings. I'm not entirely sure that there was an actual job here. Maybe they were just casually dating with no intention of going steady? I was flown to Georgia but I didn't get to meet any decision makers or senior leader in person. I don't know why I was flown to the site where there were no decision makers. I think I was at a serious disadvantage, not getting to meet anyone who mattered. My meeting with the most senior person and the clear decider (interview #16) was via video and was cut short because he had to give up the conference room to another group. It would have made way more sense for them to invite me to CA than to GA. The only people I met in Georgia would have been my subordinates, and I met them in an earlier video interview, so.... travel made no sense. I sat in a Georgia conference room and talked to people in California. As far as I can ascertain, only 2, maybe 3 people's opinions mattered (all in CA), so I am not sure why I needed to meet with so many other people repeatedly, and why these interviews weren't done in a panel, or eliminated altogether. Every time I thought there can't possibly be more, there was. Once I came back from the onsite visit, there were more next steps, so it was clear that this wasn't going anywhere. I got another offer and let HR know. When that didn't prompt an offer from UserTesting, I moved on. I was later informed that I didn't get the job anyway. This interview was incredibly wasteful, unprofessional and disrespectful of my time, as I had to find a lot of time away from my actual work for all these meetings, travel, and prep, and in the end think was wasteful of the UserTesting employees' time as well. The process was clumsy and unnecessary. It was very clear that only 2 people's opinion mattered. An HR screening + one or two additional meetings, and then a call with those 2 decision makers would have been far more thoughtful. I was disappointed and frustrated but would not relish working in an environment where decisions are made in this fashion. I'm not sure if this is indicative of the overall company culture or one department's poor management skills, but I saw that no one wants to or is able to take responsibility & make a hire. Maybe no one wants to be blamed? Working like this on routine business decisions, which hiring is, would be exhausting. While everyone I met was really nice & I would have enjoyed working with them, overall this management style and culture of indecision struck me as incompetent and bumbling. I'd hate to try to get things done against such a tide of hemming and hawing and "let's ask some more people to weigh in." There was a definite callousness and lack of consideration for me as a person and professional, not from any specific person but from the organization as a whole. I think in an effort to try out some silly & faddish interview process, they lost track of the fact that they are dealing with real people, who have time constraints, stress, hopes, other interviews, current employment, feelings, etc.
