Internal hiring is relatively easy - you are not required to notify your management about seeking another position until you are actually offered an interview with the hiring manager. This makes seeking another position easy because it does not affect your current working relationship.
External hiring is a bit frustrating because it is all done automatically from the acknowledgement letter to the letter letting you know the position is no longer available or you were not selected.
Both Internal Hiring and External Hiring for the actual interview with the hiring manager can be a bit of wait depending on the availability of the hiring manager. It is possible to have an initial phone interview and wait 3-4 weeks for a call back for the actually interview with the hiring manager. Depending on management style and salary grade of position, there could be multiple interviews over the course of another 3-4 weeks, so the process could take up to 3 months before an offer is made.
