J'ai postulé via un recruteur. Le processus a pris 6 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez United Airlines en juill. 2024

      Entretien

I was initially contacted by a United recruiter who found me on LinkedIn who invited me to apply for the role. We had an initial phone screen to discuss the role. A couple weeks after applying, I received an invite for an official phone screen with the recruiter. It was a ~30 minute call very similar to my initial phone screen, verifying that my skills matched the job description along with more info on the role. The recruiter could not answer any specific questions about the role or about benefits because the role was with a union that she was not a part of. Even though this was an office based designer job, being at the flight school, it is included in the ramp workers union. After a week, I was invited to a 1 hour panel interview with 3 different team members who asked me more in depth questions related to my past job experiences and about my skills. About a week later I received a phone call saying I had been selected, followed by a formal offer letter. The offer letter was extremely vague about many of the benefits that typically factor into a decision like this. I had to ask a lot of questions of the recruiter, but she didn't know the answers to many of those questions because of the union issue. It seemed surprising to me that someone working in hiring would know so few of these important details like healthcare benefits. She got me on a call with a union rep and it was during this call that I discovered the PTO/sick time policies to be absolutely abysmal for a salaried role. They told me that by working in the remainder of 2024, as a new hire I would be able to accrue ONE day of PTO to use in 2025, and over the course of 2025 I could accrue 5 days of vacation to be used in 2026. Sick days worked similarly in terms of accrual, but couldn't be used until the 6 month probationary period was over. Any sick days would need to be taken UNPAID, but not only that, they would deduct "points" from your attendance record each time to make sure that you aren't "abusing" unpaid time off. United really tries to sell you on the "free flight" benefits, but it's hard to use those benefits with effectively no paid vacation time. You have to work there for multiple years before you get even the standard corporate 2 weeks a year that most companies start you at for a salaried role. You can take unpaid time but then you are basically paying United to take advantage of the "free" flight benefits. When I asked about United's contribution to the healthcare plan, I was told that United does not share that information before the employee start date, but it is "neither too high, nor too low". This is normally a significant factor in evaluating an overall compensation package. It really felt like they were withholding important information about the reality of the role to make the job seem better than it was. The pay was under market standard to begin with, so when you add union dues and unpaid time (for normal things like being sick or spending time with your family), the offer felt significantly less beneficial than it was presented as. Everyone I talked to there was very nice but I could tell that they were trying their best to spin the benefits of the job. Very disappointing experience, took about 6 weeks from start to finish. Do your due diligence.
