I was contacted through a recruiter about a Senior Sales role at SGS, and after some difficulty in getting engaged, spoke with the head of HR. She indicated my background was a good fit and would be setting up something very soon with the Hiring Manager, as they wanted to move quickly since this was a ‘critical’ new role and once the boss says get it filled, he expects to get it filled. Awesome!
Three….weeks…later….with no updates (Strike One) I get an email requesting dates for a call, which I replied to immediately and set up. In the email from HR was a Job Description which was completely different from the one the recruiter sent me (Strike Two). Far less scope and responsibility, and not something I would have even engaged with had it been provided to me up front. I was going to ask for clarification on the role on the call with the Hiring Manager, but he started out very tactical – roles, quotas, deal sizes, etc. all of which I had previously provided but apparently he never bothered to look at (Strike Three – you’re out!). We had a bad phone connection (he was calling from an Indian caller ID), so I attributed it to that. But then I thought that perhaps that was a ‘sign’ to disengage from SGS. So I did.
SGS seems to a be a decent company with a good reputation in the market. But based on this experience, they are disorganized, disconnected, and just don’t have their act together in the hiring process. And the recruiter they use? Don’t get me started…
