I got selected to do a take home task which took hours and hours of my time. The feedback I got was that it wasn't simple enough. The fact that it took hours of my time and they wanted a solution with all bells and whistles (unit testing, documentation, CI/CD pipeline) tells me that John Lewis don't value the candidates time and expects free work from them.
Furthermore, even though they asked for a simple solution, the code themselves they provide is needlessly complex, I don't who they are trying to impress by doing that.
The fact that despite the amount of effort I put in, I didn't even get an interview says something about John Lewis, they want cheap labour and hire cheap candidates. I avoid them, especially if you are looking to enter a more technical role.

Question 1
Perform this technical, take home task, even though it will take hours and hours of your time, which you will have to juggle with a full time job and other commitments in your life.

No interview. I received an email from HR asking if I was available for one of the two days for 20mins. I responded yes, and send a further email later to confirm the meeting, but I have not received any emails.
