The interview process involved 2 rounds of phone interview followed by a 1.5 days onsite interview. The recruiter tries to gauge if you're a good candidate by looking at your education level, experience, and numbers of paper published. If you do not have enough publications, it is very difficult to make it to the onsite interview. Once everyone in the department interviews you, the hiring decision is left up to a committee. It is up to them to decide if the candidate will be a good fit for the role and the company culture (which is very academic). Overall, it was a great experience because according to me it was one of the toughest group to face in an interview.
