Je travaille chez Genentech à plein temps (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

    An authentic and Patient-centric mission
It is a really employee-friendly company, it pays well, and Field teams are recognized. Tons of perks like Give Back week and concert and the off-sites.
Truly great people that are fun to work with. Excellent patient speakers!

    Inconvénients

Some senior leaders use meetings as a platform to give their political views to a captive audience. I like the authenticity but not the way other view points are critiqued. Self awareness is important - think how you would feel if your all-Republican leadership team continually criticized the Democratic party, president and voters.

    Conseils à la direction

Advocate for Genentech's culture of innovation. Keep strengthening field collaboration. Help Roche integrate with our culture instead of changing it.

J'ai travaillé chez Genentech en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 10 ans)

    Avantages

True calling to change patients lives and the healthcare industry. Very smart employees who for the most part are humble and savvy. Global integration with Roche enables large scale projects and missions. Ability to work remotely and travel to various continents based upon project/work assignments.

    Inconvénients

Leaner budget for employee perks and benefits annually over the course of the Roche acquisition. Bottom line figures come to finance and not proportionate to employee well-being. Do more with less became the motto and senior management had no compromise or alternatives. A trend of utilizing talent in lesser salaried countries to work with those in the US became a factor of slower progress and various collaboration hurdles.

They emphasize that you own your own career and path but when management distributes over capacity assignments, it's a clear indication your career growth will likely be stunted.

Company culture has changed over the years, major attribute is that many senior employees from management to individual contributors have exited, thus externals have been hired to fill the void and only guess how the company culture is envisioned. With competitive organizations located within the Silicon Valley replicating the culture, it is difficult to retain employees unless you are specifically in the R&D departments.

    Conseils à la direction

Refocus energy on your internal staff and the strides they make to accomplish what many organizations cannot even fathom.

    Avantages

The sense of community is great

    Inconvénients

Upper management is tone deaf - replacing long term Genentech managers with Roche ones. The Genentech culture is disappearing.

    Conseils à la direction

Words are good, actions are better...

J'ai travaillé chez Genentech en Contrat Permanent (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Very smart, exemplary colleagues - raise your game!
    Numerous training opportunities
Encouraged to seek new roles when available
Great benefits - financial and non-monetary

    Inconvénients

Long commute for those living outside SSF but with many transit options
Lots of work, busy company - work-life balance means something different to everyone
Manager turnover could be distressing for some - depends on group/role

    Conseils à la direction

Due to manager turnover, I reported to four different people during my <2 yr employment stint. At the time, I was very frustrated with this and made an impulsive decision to chase the "greener grass" at another company. Big mistake. I still work long hours but make less money, have fewer benefits, without any hope of upward mobility (less manager turnover because there are no managers at this place...so no chance of promotion), and no longer get to work with my fabulous GNE colleagues. I believe the management did what they could to smooth the multiple transitions in our leadership team but in these types of situations, it's usually better to proactively ensure teams are functioning okay. Especially when one of the new managers is a first time FLM - extra check-ins with the group can help ease concerns about shifting priorities, esp during very busy forecast cycles. Again, nothing is perfect and having a few years to retrospectively analyze this has convinced me that management did what it could.

Prospective Employees: If you have the chance to work at GNE, make the most of it - this is a place you can learn, grow, and develop towards any biotech career path you want. No company or job is perfect but there are much worse places to work, without the mission or resources of GNE. I really regret leaving and would be happy to re-join, if possible. Learn from my mistakes. ;-)
