Entretien
I was contacted via email to schedule a phone interview with the Assistant Dean of the Department. The phone interview was great. I was called in for a face to face interview with the department which took 3 hours. I met with the hiring manager and other members. The kept asking me the same question over and over again which I felt was a lack of communication among each other with preparation. They didn't read my resume prior, however they had them printed and were asking me questions that could of been answered by simply looking at my resume. I didn't hear back from them for two weeks until I emailed the Assistant Dean as a follow up, finally the hiring manager emailed me with a response that they picked another person. I felt the interview was great but I personally don't think I would have fit in with that department. Some were friendly, while others were nonchalant, which made me feel fraught about the department interaction.

Four rounds HR screening zoom, meet the team zoom, then asked to prepare a presentation to present on zoom a third time, then asked to come in person to present to 2 hiring committees and individual interviews with the team hiring. I spent almost 5 hours there. Asked me during round 2 if I was interested in a position HR initially said had already been finalized. The position I was applying for was not crystal clear. HR sent a generic rejection email.

The whole process spanned over 3 months, including 5 rounds interviews that included
1) HR screening
2) 1st round interviews which had candidates answer questions to the camera as it automatically started recording after 10 seconds, to allow you to read questions
3) zoom meeting with hiring committee
4) another zoom meeting with hiring committee which included presenting on data points sent over and with a request to provide plan of action to student data
5) on campus visit with staff, as well as an excel assessment that had you sit at a computer and attempt to to moderate to challenging excel requests within a half hour.
Along with this the process included having your 5 references complete a form recommendation at the 4th round, and then a phone call after the 5th round.
Upon completing all these rounds and requests, I was not selected, which is sometimes how it goes. However upon thanking the committee for the opportunity, I asked for constructive feedback as this was a lengthy process that spanned for 3 months. It has since been almost a month after the rejection email without any response or input from the committee.

The interview process at Columbia University for the Assistant Director role was structured and professional. It included multiple rounds with HR and department leaders, focusing on leadership, strategy, and collaboration skills. They emphasized alignment with the university’s mission, and I was asked about my experience managing teams, working cross-functionally, and handling high-level responsibilities. Overall, the interviewers were respectful and clear about expectations.
