First, I was referred to the recruiter, who was pretty straightforward about how the team works, and what could make for a great researcher. I then had a 30-minute phone interview, which was a very friendly, laid-back experience. She asked me to tell her about myself and my background, to walk her through how I might conduct a research sprint in one week, and to describe a research lecture/class I might give at Airbnb. A week or so later I found out I'd be coming in for an in-person interview. For this, I had to build a 45-minute presentation on my personal and professional journey, research skills/style, a couple of case studies, and why I wanted to work for Airbnb. I then had 6 1-on-1 interviews with a range of team members, including 2 culture interviews. I felt they went well, but wasn't ultimately offered a spot on the team as they felt I was too junior to fit the senior roles they'd envisioned (even though I was under the impression that specific roles were not how I was being evaluated), and they thought I would not enjoy getting into the weeds as much as the job requires.

It was the first-round phone interview. After a self-introduction, I was asked a research design question and the interview asked a lot of details on the design. But it was based on qualitative research though I am a quant person.

I submitted my application online and heard back within two weeks or so. The recruiting team was amazing. They were accessible and happy to answer all of my questions. The interview process was intense, and I spend severals prepping for each interview. There was a two step process. Step 1: Virtual call with a researcher (45 minutes) During this interview, I had the opportunity to talk about my training and strengths. I discussed my dissertation research, focusing on my methodological expertise, along with other projects that show additional methodological skills. Then my interviewer gave me a short exercise where I had to problem solve on my feet. For example, "How would you study X, Y and Z?", and "How would you conduct the same research if you only had 7 days?" Step 2: Virtual Presentation (45 minutes) For this part, I basically an academic job talk geared toward an interdisciplinary audience. Two people watched the talk and asked questions. Virtual call with a researcher with a focus on research skills (30 minutes) The researcher was super nice, and asked me questions about my background. They told me to prepare for the following questions: If you were teaching a class on design research, what three things would you want to make sure students walked away with? How would you decide your methods and account for bias/validity? Virtual call with a researcher with a focus on communication (30 minutes) This interview was with another researcher, who was also friendly. For this interview, they told me to prepare for the following questions: What are some different ways you communicate your work to different audiences? What is an example of a time when your findings were not well received, and how did you progress? How do you give and respond to constructive feedback? Cross-functional interview (30 minutes) I found this interview to be the easiest. This interviewer tried to get to know me as a person and tried to get a sense of why I wanted to work at Airbnb.

I got referral by friends. The experience is negative. First, hr hasn't contacted me for almost a month until my friend contacted them the third time. The hr handling referral left and obviously nobody took her/his cases, so applications just got ignored. Second, I was scheduled for A for phone technical interview, but I actually interviewed by B with no heads up, and B was late for about 10 min. It is quite obvious B hasn't glance at my resume at all. He was a qual person, but my expertise is more quant..which doesn't matter much but he didn't ask me for my area... also when he asked questions, from the way he speaks I can tell he just read from screen... Third, his question doesn't really make sense, going from one extreme to another, and later on he admitted the scenarios he gave rarely happen in company settings...>< I got rejection the coming day with no feedbacks, even I asked. In general, the interview experience is not respectful and doesn't seem serious. I feel like they decided to reject me before I started the interview. Especially given this role as a ux researcher, being not empathetic to people make it more paradox.
