Jennifer Litzelman, a second-generation Merry Maids franchisee in Charlotte, North Carolina, has turned her family's cleaning business into something much bigger: a support system for families navigating busy lives, health crises, and everything in between. As the daughter of Merry Maids owners, Litzelman grew up immersed in the business. She eventually took over as owner in 2019, just months before the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, she has leaned into the role with purpose, prioritizing both client safety and community engagement. “We provide residential and small-scale commercial cleaning services, but it’s also about building relationships,” she said. She is committed to trust and consistency - something she says clients should prioritize when hiring any cleaning service. With vetted staff, open communication and the backing of a national brand, her Merry Maids team is prepared to step in and support their customers no matter what life brings. “We stand by our word,” Litzelman said. “If something isn’t up to your satisfaction, we’ll make it right. That’s who we are."

Since 2016, Betty Kowal has been building her franchise – Merry Maids of Mendota Heights in Minnesota. She and her team have shared successes both in fostering a close-knit family culture and also in business as they have doubled in size from the time they opened. In honor of black History Month, we asked Betty to share what it means to her to be a Black Business owner. She says, "This was not a solo mission; I have an amazing team surrounding me...who go out there every day and provide excellent service to our clients. We foster a culture of belonging and family, and we make sure every person feels valued and appreciated. More so for me it is two-fold, I am a black immigrant. So, I suppose it is being able to achieve the proverbial American dream. I hope that my journey and my story will be able to inspire people who look like me."
