Could our water systems become the frontlines of global health? The Lancet Group Commission on Investing in Health, in its Global Health 2050 report, outlined a path to reducing premature deaths by half by mid-century — with infectious disease control identified as a key priority. Researchers like Dr. Sarmila Tandukar are advancing that goal. Her team uses wastewater-based epidemiology to detect pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and trace antimicrobial resistance genes. By monitoring wastewater, sewage and rivers, they’re creating early warning systems that enable faster responses and help prevent outbreaks. It’s a powerful example of how existing infrastructure can be reimagined to protect public health — and save lives. How else could this approach improve global health?
