The interview is a three stage process. The telephone interview was fine. That happened on the same day I applied online. If successful they move you on to an in person interview with a trial shift/discovery session immediately following. If you're mostly a home cook with a background in customer service and are not chef trained they should not be looking at you for an interview in reality. They saw my experience at McDonald's in customer service and thought I'd be up to the task. It became very clear what they're actually after is a chef. They set a timer and wanted me to portion a whole tray of frozen edemame beans in 12 mins as a first task, the second task they wanted me to slice chilli peppers like a chef in 2 different methods and set a 15 min timer. Wanted me to complete the whole thing. If you're new to this and you've never done it before it's dangerous to be timing a person like that as it could have caused an accident. They then wanted me to do a pot wash and see how much I could get done in 15 mins. By this point I was soaking as their spray nozzle was facing backwards the entire time. I have worked on pot wash before. Theirs was just really awkward. Finally they put me on a station and guided me how to cook yaki soba. All whilst these tasks were happening they would deliberately send people over to talk to you and distract you from your task. They want to see how you interact with the kitchen staff whilst you are against the clock. In honest I found the discovery/trial shift unnecessarily harsh. I feel like for interview process they need to up their screening mechanisms by specifying on the job advertisement that they're looking for people who are chef trained and have been to culinary school. It's not the sort of job for your average home cook. Also with regards to your statutory holiday which you're entitled to by law they'll say one thing on the phone interview and then tell you they can't accommodate that at the end of the discovery session to see what you're reaction is. I was very careful in how I answered that question. Very crafty and I'm not impressed with them at all. To no surprise I didn't get the job
