Hello, I am an iOS freelance developer who applied around 2 months and a half ago to toptal Long story short, i managed to pass the technical screening process till i got to the test project step I was asked to make a small project within 2 weeks In the first two-three days i had a back injury but i didnt notify the screener because it is my job to finish on time and not his fault Fast forward to the interview time, i started by saying that i had a back injury but that didnt stop me from continuing my task and finishing it before the deadline by one day because i really had a goal to join toptal The screener surprisingly took it as a disadvantage that i did that and he stated that i should have notified him and that wasnt a good thing from my side After half way in demonstrating the app he interrupted me and started asking me questions outside the scope of my expertise (things related to security) like what if the iphone was jailbroken and how am i handling the security of the account which is the job of the backend developer not mine and so on I wont lie there was a minor feature (not requirement) i didnt implement because i really dont know how this small thing slipped out of my mind which could have been done in 2 minutes(pull to refresh tableview), but he kept talking about it throughout the whole interview and said "it is really weird that you didnt do that, its a common sense and i think every developer should already know that she/he has to do it" i mean ok maybe its true but he could have said it nicer ! he asked about something in the app (which is not a requirement at all) i told him its not a requirement so he was "mmm" and started taking notes that i didnt do this part ! and i double checked the requirements and it wasnt there ! Not forgetting that he didnt let me finish demonstrating the whole app and he stated that there is a requirement i didnt finish when im pretty sure i did but he didn't allow me to show him ! He asked me for the backend part (i am an iOS developer so the backend isnt in my expertise) and insisted on reviewing the backend part, when i tried uploading the backend part i used my other laptop which on the startup its kind of slow so i apologized for letting him wait a bit and told him that its because by other laptop is slow he replied "heh so you decided to do your backend on a slow laptop" as if i was lying or stupid ! He told me he wont give me the final answer unless i show him the backend part which again is not in my task requirement For the backend i used .Net core and mysql and for him it wasnt a good choice because i should have used firebase, where all i wanted to show him that i am eager to learn and that i can learn fast and challenge myself which obviously it was a disadvantage to him At the end of the interview i told him to give me some head ups because i really worked hard for this he just laughed and said i'll contact you in 24 hrs when you send the backend part, bye bye for now and left the meeting I truly believe he only wanted to fail me and he always pointed on the negative things without saying anything positive and i dont know why he was that mean to me ! And i really believe i deserve to be treated much better because i know i've done my task very well and worked hard for this whole screening process for the past 2-3 months Now my application is closed till 2 years from now ! i am pretty sure i wont apply again to this company ! i am not ready to go through this stressful process to get declined for such purposes Sorry for this very long story, but the screener made me live the worst interviewing experience i have ever seen
