      Entretien

My friend and I went to the above location to apply for this position, as we fit the critera and the job sounded very enjoyable. When I notified the gentleman at the front counter that I had saw the Craigslist ad for an open position and we were interested in applying, his first response was that the sales position wasn't open, it would be the shop position. I nodded in agreement as I had thoroughly read the above ad and knew what the open position was for. He flatly told us of the days and times that the open position was for. He then asked us if we were aware that it involved using large tools such as a table saw, and that this job really wasn't open for anyone who didn't have experience handling large tools or making plastic (please keep in mind that this is before he saw our applications or even knew anything about us). My friend and I looked at each other, confused. We both have experience working with our hands, building product, and my friend has actually held for some time a job very similar to this one. When I informed him that of our direct experience, he seemed unimpressed and, frankly, in disbelief. I should point out that we're both women. I ended up not taking the application because even though I outlined my prior job experience, he told me that I was unhirable due to my lack of experience in making plastic, and although she took her application, she expressed her doubt to work here. The ad clearly states that "prior experience is NOT required" or that this is a job for someone who wants flexibility in their schedule (both of which were refuted by the gentleman). I didn't appreciate his attitude or behavior, and I doubt that if a young man were to have come in to apply for the same job that he would have assumed he didn't have experience, held doubt in his abilities, or gave him the same disrespectful treatment. My friend did notice that everyone working in the back of the store were men, and if you guys are only looking to hire fellas, then please state that in your ad so that I don't waste my time. Update: I did write to the company exactly what I've posted here, but received no response. I guess they don't care much about their discriminatory hiring practices.

It was all difficult--and very annoying.
