If a company asks candidates to involve their professional network, the least they can do is follow through with honest communication. I would advise future candidates to ask for a clear, written outline of all the steps in the process before taking any action that could affect their professional relationships.

It was warm and professional. I enjoyed the conversation and found it to be a great fit for both of us. I felt that the role aligned on all my values and goals.
