I made contact with someone I knew from a past internship who worked at Refinery29 and she passed my resume on to an editor who served as their intern hiring manager. I had a phone interview with her in which she asked about past internship experience and how I planned to apply past skills to R29. At the conclusion of our phone call, she asked for story pitches and writing samples to go along with the pitches. I submitted the samples several days after our phone call and was offered an internship a day or two after that.
