I interviewed for a temporary, 6-month role as a Legal Case Summaries Writer. I received an email from their HR team about a week after applying to set up a phone interview. Two days after the phone interview, I was invited to the next round of their hiring process, which involved a writing skills test (draft a case summary of a real case from a law school casebook) and a cognitive assessment test via ondemandassessment.com. The cognitive assessment was a bit surprising to me - mostly comprised of basic math/logic puzzles and you complete as many as possible within a limited time span. Not quite sure what it had to do with the actual role, but felt like it might disadvantage neurodiverse applicants. The writing test was what I'd expect for this role.

Entretien
The first round after applying is an assignment similar to the job role - you are tasked with summarizing a legal case. They send you the sample case to summarize according to their very specific guidelines. It is all very straightforward because they give detailed instructions and ample time to complete the assignment. There was no screening call or interview before the technical component. The assignment does take more than a few hours of work though, and it is not compensated.

I submitted an application online. Ten days later, I received a take-home test via email. I was asked to read a case and write a case summary according to their editorial guidelines. The sample was due five days later, though they gave me the wrong date the first time. I sent the sample back via email. Over two weeks later, I received a boiler plate mail merged email rejecting me for no stated reason. When I followed up, I received more boiler plate language. The person who responded to me through the process seemed to only acknowledge my emails with responses when II only heard from these people when I requested read receipts. That felt odd. They ran ads everywhere - no doubt they wasted a lot of individuals' time. The take-home exam (unartfully named by them) was a game of hide the ball. It was hard to discern what they were looking for, and that seemed by design. Any well-run organization would give you training. The process was disrespectful. The writing sample was a simple exercise, but it took a lot of time. My time. Uncompensated time. Their refusal to communicate with me in any detail is disrespectful of applicants. It suggests a poor company culture, despite what their reviews say. I wouldn't waste my time applying unless you have time to waste.
