      Entretien

Information discovered during the hiring process raised several red flags for me. The experience began with a group interview followed by individual interviews if you were approved to move forward. Comments from current employees involved in this process caused me to reconsider whether I wanted to work with this team. Two alarming statements were made. The recruiter casually stated that Penn-Mar tends to hire black women who are single parents of young children for support service work because they are desperate, pliable and accept the low wages. This comment from a staff member is simply offensive and indicates an inherent disrespect and condescension that I hope does not extend to the adults with disabilities at the center. Then, the man with whom I interviewed described a work environment at Penn-Mar that could not find employment for people with disabilities who were ready and able to work. In fact, the so-called discovery process during which clients are evaluated had been put on hold for two years! In translation, these folks have been waiting at least two years for trusted Penn-Mar employees to find them suitable work. The number of people who are ready to work is 50. And the two men in charge could not find work for them for at least two years? What have they been doing? Perhaps the generous funding that Penn-Mar recently received was the perfect motivation to bring on more employees who would be tasked with finding that work and clear the backlog those two people created. Perhaps Penn-Mar needs to reevaluate its administrative staff and, through that gutting process, hire people who actually want to help people with disabilities.
