      Entretien

To begin, I was approached by who appeared to be a contract recruiter via Linkedin and was requested to consider the role of Market General Manager. I'd never heard of the company, but from research thought it might be something of personal interest. The organization is having difficulty penetrating the Houston market, and wanted someone to drive market growth. The role of HR is being managed by their People function and it shows. My recruitment process was lacking; sketchy scheduling, limited/non communication, verbal deadlines ignored, interviewers unprepared and clearly not comparing notes, me driving the conversation, unknowledgeable interviewers, etc. However, I remained interested, as the challenges appeared exciting and were right in my wheelhouse. I looked forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work. But, nothing came of it. The organization leans heavily into assessments and what they've described as a "case study." It is, however, better described as an unpaid consultation. The "case" is not fictitious; it is literally the problem they need a MGM to address. I declined to complete the case study, but offered many ways forward (further interviews, detailed CV, references, work samples) -- I would have also completed an actual (read: non consultative) case study or the organization could have booked an hour of my time and I would have walked them through a deep-dive analysis. Presently, I am a consultant and it would be unethical from my paying clients' perspective and exploitative from a personal perspective to have completed what was described as a case study. I said this many times, but no one there seemed to understand or perhaps care, only continued attempts at getting me to comply. Thankfully, I am in a career position where I can stand up for myself and others and do what feels right. After being told I'd receive follow-up, none came, which is pretty unprofessional. However, all the best to the organization moving forward.
