      Entretien

I applied via BuiltInChicago and had several interview calls. The first call was with a recruiter, the second was with the lead front-end engineer, and the final call was a follow-up with the lead to answer more questions I had about the team and culture. The call(s) with the lead were technical in nature, mostly JavaScript and React trivia to demonstrate proficiency with the tech they use. I didn't answer everything correctly; while I wish I had studied a little more for this, the lead was thoughtful and really enjoyable to talk with. Interacting with him made me feel like I was talking to a real person, someone I could definitely see myself working with. He went out of his way to answer extra questions I had on a second call later in the day, which meant a lot. I didn't get the job, but I got some solid feedback, which has been rare in my applications process.

The interview process consisted of a phone call with HR, phone call with engineers, onsite coding interview with engineers, onsite interview with upper management and then a take home coding project. It wasn't great that the technical interview and upper management interview were on separate days- originally they were both supposed to be on the same day but I guess something happened and I was told the day of we'd have to reschedule so I had to take an extra day off of work. The process started off very nicely but ended up poorly. Everyone was very receptive and quick to respond at the beginning but responses took longer and longer as time went on. The most disappointing part for me was the overall lack of feedback that was given after THREE different tech interviews- phone call, in-person coding challenge and take home coding challenge. I wasn't offered the position and the email simply said "we need someone who more closely matches what the position needs". When I asked for some feedback I was told just one piece of very arbitrary information. You would hope that after interviewing with a company over the course of a month+ they'd take a minute or two to provide some real feedback.
