      Entretien

Tim, one of Made By Many’s three co-founders, wore a fisherman’s cap, a lapel pin giving the middle-finger, and Karl Marx’s beard. He looked liked the logo for a punk rock fish-stick brand. Definitely loves Stuart Lee but thinks everyone else laughing doesn’t really get it. Always clicks out of those yellow “Please donate now” boxes on the Guardian’s website when he’s sure no one’s looking. William, the second founder, has two moustaches for his eyebrows and a Wildean bewilderment at your attempts to speak to him like a fellow human. He pairs his self-assured smarts with a couture artist’s smock that looks like he spends his weekends painting canvases while his cat, Hermione, sits by his feet. Except you can tell he’d be very upset if anything ever spilled on his clothes. His LinkedIn says he went to Manchester, and one suspects that if they asked, he’d say he went there over Oxbridge because he didn’t want to go to “…a uni associated with the Church.” But really he wasn’t given the choice. Georgie, the third founder, is more English than embarrassment: her nose looks perpetually cold and you can tell she has a warm heart and gives people the benefit of the doubt but can also fire you with the decisiveness of a paper cut. Tim spent the interview either writing illegible notes like a witchdoctor’s prescriptions, or doodling in a way that was meant to signal he can doodle well while comprehending you. His major interest was seeming uninterested. Have you seen Muholland Drive? There’s that scene where the Hollywood producer is served the perfect cup of espresso by a white-gloved butler. It’s meant to impress him, but specifically because of this, he over-reacts and almost throws-up with displeasure. That’s Tim. William is more like a public school headmaster who acts like he’s wounded that boys are no longer made to read the Iliad in Greek, but he also secretly watches their rugby matches from the window. Georgie is cool. Made by Many strikes me as a great place to work, though, and you can sense people are happy. I also think Tim, William, and Georgie are probably great bosses, too. I sensed they care a lot and are decent to people, although I think Tim and William take pains to feel and look smart. They’re the kind of guys who idolise Steve Jobs so much, they nit-pick and retrospectively critique him with unconscious projection and displacement pathologies. But they totally own black turtlenecks.
