      Entretien

As someone who has tried and failed at getting a tenure track position as a math professor at a community college in at least 20 interviews, I can safely say this school has the absolute worst interview process I've come across. Let's start from the beginning. Most schools give you 10 or so minutes to look over the interview questions before the panel asks them. This helps nervous people like myself remember the things they have to say before being surrounded by 12 people. People in mathematics are some of the most anxious and nonsocial people there are, but I guess this is not taken into account at LATTC because they did not provide any time to look over the questions. Next, they don't have students attend the teaching demonstration, so you cannot actually display how you teach because the committee members are not allowed to respond or even do anything if you have a demonstration you want them to participate in. Despite the terrible interview I somehow fluked myself into the final interview. No doubt it was some kind of dinner for schmucks situation where they already had an adjunct in mind to hire so they needed to put up other obviously bad candidates. I received the call for the final interview in a timely fashion, however the final interview was not scheduled until a month later. This was because they needed to hire and train a new President on how to interview people. Due to this major delay the final interview interfered with a vacation I had already planned. This school did not offer any choice of day or time for the final interview so I was forced to buy an extra ticket to fly home from my vacation early. Other final interviews I've been in have been less rigid and structured, and have been more conversational. This is a nice change from the typical first interview structure. However, this final interview was almost the same as the first interview. It had 10 questions, no responses or conversation from the committee, no time to look over the questions before being asked. In fact it was even worse than the first interview because it was as if they just googled "interview questions" without any thought as to what a tenure track math professor does. at a community college. They asked where I see myself in 5 or 10 years. Well, it's a tenure track position so obviously I would be in the same exact place. They asked what 3 words my coworkers would use to describe me. They did not ask anything about how I teach math. This type of interview could easily have been done on zoom so I wouldn't have had to spend extra money flying home for a 15 minute interview. Finally, they took 2 more weeks to tell me I did not get the job when it was obvious that the interview went horribly and they probably could have told me immediately. The irony of course was that the person in charge of telling me I did not get the job was on vacation so she couldn't get back to me. Her vacation was obviously more important than mine was though, so that makes sense.
