On the teachers’ day, seventeen parallel interviews were going on owing to yet the large number of candidates from varied background incl physics, chemistry, biotech, mech, elect, ece, chemical, it, cse, mba etc; you name it, they have it. Each interview was a one-on-one type, ranging from 5 to 15 minutes ordinarily and larger in case of cse and IT people, or those whose CV was too interesting to throw questions. The first question interviewer asked me was to tell something about myself, probably the most general question ever in any interview which I was quite prepared about. The next question came out of my introduction only and a couple of question about my family background and all. Then he had a look at my CV and asked what font I had used, I said sir calibri. He was suspicious of the size and thickness of the letters printed. Then he noticed the type of paper on which the CV was printed and went on to ask where have you got it printed? How much did the shopkeeper charge you for this? I replied it all without any doubt because, afterall it was all done by myself. Next he asked me as why did I want to migrate from chemical to IT branch, knowing that all I’ll do is coding sitting in front of a computer. I was indeed prepare for this question also and was successful in convincing him the cause. Few more questions which he threw at me- - Whats the recent going on in the IT world - What trends are going on in the IT world- sorry don’t know - Are you ready to do extensive coding - Can you do programming in C++? Yes sir. Write a prog for palindrome. This came as another setback. I knew I had done palindrome earlier in class 12th. But what is a palindrome? “1 1 2 3 5” or “MADAM” I forgot this, and he understood me, told me and then we moved on - Have you heard about facebook and whatsapp in recent past? Answered. Tell something about it? Answered. For how many dollars? Answered. Then to make me a little comfortable he came back to my chemical engineering field, wrote “H + O = H20” and asked whether this is correct. Then he played for next 2-3 questions over this equation until we arrived at the correct equation and then said “you must be wondering why he is asking class 8th question” and then we moved on with a slight smile. He asked the subject I liked the most in my chemical engineering. Sir Fluid Flow. Can you tell me some equation or concept from FF? Gave him the formula for Reynolds number. Can you tell me any concept of FF used in aviation industry? Sir Bernoulli’s principal. Any use in F1 cars. I shattered in this question but gave some answer which turned out to be wrong so he himself gave me the correct answer. Next he went on to ask few critical questions about myself- have you ever solved a problem? Sir like what, in academics or – no no, whatever you think is good enough to mention. After some thinking I gave an answer which was not good enough, so he asked for another problem, to which I said Sir no, I haven’t. Then he asked any greatest achievement I have made to which I honestly had to say sir no, nothing worth mentioning. After one whole day of waiting for my turn at interview, I was already fed up of so many negative answers. As if this was not all, he went on to thoroughly look at my CV. I had mentioned about an ongoing project which he asked what are you doing on this project, how far have you reached and all. I had also mentioned a project I did in my class 12th science exhibition on ‘magnetic levitation’, so he asked me to draw a line diagram for it and explain. Fortunately I had a picture of it in my phone and he said “bring your phone, let’s see” and then he asked for every detail of the same. He also asked meaning of the word ‘Forte’ I had written somewhere in the CV. Then he wound up by saying ‘thank you Mr xxxx, nice talking to you and all the best’. The result was declared late at 10.30 pm on 6th sept and I was in. Very nice interaction. If you do not belong to IT/ CS, the best you can do to is to prepare ‘about yourself’, and for any question relating to you CV and a little knowledge of your own domain too.
