Try to remain positive and show them that you're staying positive. Apologize if necessary. Ask them questions to show that you're interested in their problem and show that you're willing to help them in any way possible. If their mood starts to change and becomes more positive you are doing your job right. If they are still upset keep trying because giving up is like failing yourself and that customer, and it creates more problems than the one you started out with.
