I applied online for the Spring Insight Programme at HSBC in November. The process was quite simple. There was no cover letter, although there were several questions which in essence acted as a cover letter because they asked about things you would typically put in your CL. I heard back from them in the beginning of January and was invited to an interview. The interview itself was pretty easy and was entirely competency-based. The interview was the final round of the application process.

Question 1
There were no unexpected questions whatsoever. As I said, the interview was 100% competency-based.

I went through two rounds of assessment centers, including situational and behavioral assessments, as well as recorded video responses, which were a part of the situational assessments. Overall the process has little to do with what you already know but rather with what kind of personality they are looking for in a candidate. The assessments took ages to complete: 2-3x the time stated.

This should give you a pretty good idea of how the questions look like. I don't belive there is any way to prepare for this type of questions without insider information.
