I applied online was and contacted either the next of a few days later via email to set up a phone interview. The phone interview went great, the interviewer was super nice and basically told me I was in line for the job, but that I would have to have an in-person interview to meet her group leader and her to see if we were compatible, but she said it was and I quote just a "formality." Sounds all great right? We schedule the interview date and time on the phone and then I emailed her thanking her for the phone call and how I was looking forward to meeting her and her group leader. Then at 9:32pm the night before the interview I get an email saying the interview needs to be rescheduled for later in the day, with a time that conflicted with my schedule which I had mentioned to her already. A bit annoyed I emailed her telling that unfortunately, I could not make the time she suggested if there was another day that would work for them, this already makes me look bad. However, she seemed accommodating and asked me to send her the days and time I was available. Finally, we confirmed date and time, I had it in my calendar. Then again the night before the interview I receive an email at 9:11pm pushing the interview back one hour and changing locations. I thought okay this is the second time they reschedule me what is going on, a bit unprofessional, but I brushed it off. Then it was not until the date of the interview hour before that I was given the location meaning the floor and room the interview was on. Fine, I get to the building I check in with the front desk she brushes me off I got up to the floor and the door is locked need ket card to get in however, a nice women lets me in and asks me who I am meeting with I tell her the names and she says if they are expecting I answer yes. I sit on the blue sofa waiting. I waited 15 mins and at the 5 mins mark before my interview I sent her an email letting her know I had arrived and was in the entrance they arrived late to the interview they rescheduled 2 times and did not even acknowledge me sitting on the sofa they went straight to the interview room unsure if it was actually them I went to the room to see, at this point, it seems as if I was late. I walk into the room super awkward he is speaking on the phone loudly, but she gets up to greet me, I stick out my RIGHT hand as you do in the business world and instead on shanking me with her right hand as well we have an awkward right hand -left handshake, honestly I felt like I wouldn't recover from that. I sit down at the table and he ends his phone call and now they are both on their phone, I understand busy people they excuse themselves but they continue using their phones until done, super unprofessional though. Then the interview starts asks me generic questions like tell me about yourself, what I am looking to get out of the internship, etc. He then picks up a phone call during the meeting, instead of letting it go to voicemail, however, he lets the person know that he is in a meeting and hangs up quickly. then I answer all the questions and they seem to like my answers, they asked me if I would be comfortable doing certain task that the job involves I say yes, I was asked if had an experience for this I said no but I am always will to learn and that I am a fast learner so that should hold me back, they were fine with that. She complimented the way I talk an express myself said it was an important part of the job and towards the end of the interview they used words that highly suggested that I was given the internship on the spot. "Welcome to the team." "We will have you meet the rest of the team." "I'll email you with the next steps so we can coordinate." These were some phrases thrown around at the end of what seemed to be a pretty good interview before I leave we say our goodbyes share a few laughs and parts ways. I left smiling and happy that I had finally landed an internship, and would be working with pretty cool people despite the rough start. The next day I am about to send a thank you email, which I should have emailed earlier but nonetheless better late than never, when I open my email I see an email from the women I have been in contact with. I open the email and the smile that had been on my face since the interview soon faded and was replaced with confusion and a bit of blurred vision, the email read "We wanted to let you know that the team ultimately decided pursue another candidate for this role." Seriously, after hiring me on the spot, you then decide to pursue another candidate, how unbelievably unprofessional. Why hire me or tell me those things if you are considering other people? Not to mention this is UNPAID internship. If this is the Compass culture, then I can really do without it.
