About the Role
North Arc is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to bridge product development and manufacturing. In this role, you will turn concepts into robust, production-ready designs - ensuring they are not only high-performing, but also manufacturable, scalable, and repeatable.
You will work at the intersection of design and manufacturing, taking ownership from early concept through validation and into production. This includes making design decisions around tolerancing, materials, and processes, while identifying and mitigating technical risks.
Working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and external vendors, you will ensure alignment between design intent and production capability, supporting prototype builds and refining designs based on real-world feedback.
This position reports directly to the VP of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate product concepts into production-ready designs, including detailed drawings, tolerance stack-ups, assemblies, and Bills of Materials (BOMs), with strong emphasis on DFM/DFA.
- Perform tolerance analyses and capability assessments to ensure robust and repeatable product performance.
- Evaluate and refine existing designs by identifying risks, improving performance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop complete mechanical drawing packages in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2018 (GD&T) standards.
- Create and maintain key engineering documentation, including: Design FMEAs, Control Plans, DVP&R, SOPs, and Technical reports and BOMs.
- Support product lifecycle changes through Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
Ideal Candidate Skillset
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (P.Eng. is an asset).
- ~10+ years of experience in mechanical design, ideally involving: High-precision components and assemblies, Tight tolerance environments, and Product development through production.
Technical Strengths:
- Strong foundation in subtractive manufacturing processes.
- Experience designing for injection molding and/or die casting is an asset.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (including PDM).
- Deep understanding of GD&T and tolerance stack-ups.
- Exposure to automation systems (PLC, pneumatics, motion systems) is an asset.
- Familiarity with Python or scripting tools is a plus.
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Clear communicator with solid documentation discipline.
- Comfortable working both independently and within cross-functional teams.
