Avantages
Good work-life balance. Good compensation. Good amount of time split between office and field. Respectful and helpful community of engineers and managers. Large variety of interesting structural failures to investigate. Interesting research on different failure mechanisms. I have known several people in the industry working for different companies. My experience at ProNet Group seems to be the best among them. The company is rather small, but growing with a lot of work coming in.
Inconvénients
Not any with respect to the company itself. With respect to the industry overall: Completing reports on time can be a challenge if you have a backlog, but the overall pressure and time crunch is considerably less than design engineering. On occasion, days can be a long if you have multiple inspections. Dealing with certain people onsite can get tiring after a while (public adjusters, disgruntled homeowners, etc.). Residential roof covering inspections aren't the most interesting (luckily not most of the inspections are roofs, but might depend on the area of the country). Math/calculation light.
