Je travaille chez Wiley à plein temps (Plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

Great benefits and people are friendly. As long as you remain as part of a small pocket within the org, you will be happier. High percentage of long tenure. Wiley is finding ways to reinvent itself and the business they are in. Enthusiastic and creative new CEO.

    Inconvénients

The wider Wiley culture has suffered throughout the years due to lay-offs and the overall turmoil and change experienced by the publishing industry

    Conseils à la direction

sharing a tangible vision that speaks to every job can provide more engagement. Alignment between words and actions is important.

J'ai travaillé chez Wiley en contrat permanent (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

    - Good benefits and working hours (9-4:30); they are also very flexible and understanding regarding work from home and family care time
    - Generally speaking, everyone is very professional, competent and hardworking. I found it very inspiring and motivating.
    - They just moved to a new office in Yonge/Eglington, brand new and very nice
    - The Canadian office is mid-size but Wiley US is quite big, with the head office in NYC – you might get a chance to go there for training/meetings

    Inconvénients

    - Everyone, especially the people working in editorial and production, is overworked. Seriously overworked.
    - In addition to being overworked, employees are also underpaid.
    - The company is going through tough times (also due to the more general situation of the publishing industry) and restructuring, so it is quite unstable
    - All of the three points above really affect employees’ morale, which is generally quite low. People are demotivated and feel underappreciated
    - There aren’t many growth opportunities for young people, who for the most part end up leaving.

    Conseils à la direction

You really need to work on your employee retention strategy. And think about ways to open up career opportunities for the junior and mid-level staff. Also, I understand this applies not only to Wiley but the publishing industry in general, but people need to be paid fairly. Especially considering that the workload seems to keep growing.

    Avantages

Great people, good benefits, healthy work-life balance.

    Inconvénients

Not a lot of room for growth; company is in constant flux; salaries aren't great.

    Conseils à la direction

The company has shrunk enough in recent years. It's time to start equipping people with the tools they need to do their jobs. Look at growing the talent you have outside of Hoboken. Develop product faster than you make organizational changes. Be willing to speak openly about what we're not doing well.

J'ai travaillé chez Wiley en contrat permanent

    Avantages

The culture at Wiley was excellent. Benefits were very generous, as was work/life balance. Employees felt a real sense of camaraderie and the overall sense of job satisfaction was quite high.

    Inconvénients

Changes to the direction of the business created low morale - the general sense was that communication from c-level executives to employees was poor.

J'ai travaillé chez Wiley en contrat permanent (Plus de 10 ans)

    Avantages

The culture WAS wonderful for years - like one big happy family. Great location in Hoboken - lots of restaurants, stores of every kind (except book stores, which was kind of strange), etc. Terrific cafeteria with the best short order cook in the world. Genuinely nice, helpful people.

    Inconvénients

When the old leadership team retired, it's like the company just fell apart. They got rid of the woman who had been training for years to replace the old PT president and replaced her with a Steven Smith crony, and the new PT president is awful. What the old PT president spent 25 years working to make the best PT division in publishing, the new guy managed to destroy in two years.

Systems are very slow. Several years ago, they made a huge acqusition that was supposed to make things better, but they should have taken that money and updated the systems. They're trying to do that now and they're just not making very much progress, because the economy tanked. If they'd had the systems in place for better online publishing, they could have ridden it out.

Compensation for asssistants is well below average.

    Conseils à la direction

Why the heck didn't you talk to managers and find out what was really going on instead of relying on a series of consulting companies who didn't know what they were doing? They got rid of the best people, including my boss who had been there for 19 years and was the only editor in the department whose publications consistently made or exceeded her annual numbers.
