Decent work-life balance Remote work is still possible in some areas, though it feels increasingly uncertain Some genuinely great people: smart, talented, and helpful colleagues

Inconvénients

Never seen a company decline this fast. What the hell happened? Although never perfect, Pleo used to be a genuinely great company with an amazing culture. Now it's become so dysfunctional that it would be funny, if so many people weren't constantly dealing with the consequences of horrible, horrible leadership decisions. The last year has been especially bad. Most of the senior leadership team, including some generally well-liked leaders, was replaced. Since then, the company has become increasingly corporate and toxic: a very top-down management style, increased pressure, opaque communication, fake kindness, and much of the culture and fun that made Pleo special has disappeared. Reorgs and layoffs have become the new normal. There have already been three rounds in the last nine months, and counting. Even the latest CTO only lasted a few months. It's always the same cycle: the worrying last-minute meeting invite, the vague announcement about "proposed organisational changes," and the dreaded layoffs. People seem to be selected with little regard for tenure, contributions, or impact. Questionable hires are made for similar roles at the same time, and employees are shamelessly replaced with short-term contractors. The justification is always some variation of the same corporate buzzwords: "simplifying the structure," "increasing competitiveness," "setting the company up for success," "AI-native teams," and then you're served another "are you excited about AI?" speech. Meanwhile, the teams left behind receive no support despite reduced headcount and constantly changing scope. Once they have finally recovered and adapted, it's time for the next reorg and the cycle starts again. If you question any of it, you're told that Pleo is not for you. The product itself is aging and riddled with tech debt, and the company has never managed to make a profit from it. It used to stand out in the market, but now competitors have caught up. Rather than focusing on meaningful innovation, top management is obsessed with chasing the latest AI trend. It's presented as the solution to every problem, but in practice it often feels like it's not addressing the real issues, creating more technical debt and stuffing the product with AI features that no one asked for. At this point, it's so bad that almost everyone in product and engineering seems to have lost faith in the future of the company. People who still care are completely burnt out. Some are even quitting without having anything else lined up. Maybe that's all you need to know about what it’s like to work for Pleo

Hello, We appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective, and we're glad the comment about the people at Pleo came through - that's something we hear a lot and don't take lightly. Pleo has been on a transformation journey over the last 18 months as part of setting us up for the future. New leadership has come in with a clear mandate to build the strengths Pleo needs for its next chapter, in a market that's only getting more competitive. That kind of change won't be for everyone, and that's ok - we'll always aim to support those finding it difficult through it or onto new things. We don't think it's fair to assume everyone on this journey would describe it the way this review does; we hear from a lot of people that they find it motivating to be part of what is genuinely an inflection point for Pleo. On the product - when we started in 2015, we were largely alone in this category. We focused on our customers and the experience we wanted to build, and that's what got us here. The market is busier now, with more competitors approaching spend management in different ways - and that's a good thing, it pushes us to keep improving, which is what drives us. AI isn't going anywhere, and we believe it's prudent to make sure Pleo - and our customers - are ready for that, not playing catch up later. We want to stay at the front rather than resting on what we've built, because there will always be more we can do for the people who rely on us. That means making hard calls, and not every one of those will land the same way for everyone living through it. What we can say is the intent has stayed consistent - building something that lasts, for our customers and for the people building it with us. Lastly, for anyone finding these changes difficult, we're committed to supporting them - whether that's speaking to their manager, our People team, making use of MyndUp, or talking to one of our in-house mental health first aiders. We provide a lot of support because we really do want people to use it when they need it.
