It's actually Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It's the protocol that allows computers or other systems on a network to be automatically assigned an IP address within the appropriate subnet to allow them to communicate within the network. Without this, any new computer connected to the network would need to have an IP address manually assigned to it and configured on the system.
