I remember my kid of around 5 yrs old looking at a cycling race one day (on TV) and asking me — Papa, That’s so amazing. How do they not fall off the cycle? I was taken aback a bit — what seemed so simple and normal to me seemed incredibly difficult to my young son. Made me think and eventually realize that everything seems difficult initially due to: 1. We look at things without knowledge of how it is done 2. The fear of trying and failing makes us rather not try it at all 3. Motivation to want to try doing it So no knowledge, no faith (leading to fear) and no motivation to try. Which led me to believe that to achieve anything that seems difficult initially if we had these three things in order, we would probably be able to do it, namely: 1. Motivation/ Passion/ Drive to do it. Unless you really want to do something, you would look at it as being difficult and never try doing it 2. Knowledge. Without knowing how to do something new and still trying, you would set yourself up for failure. Gather the required knowledge, either from people who have done it before, or from reading good books or knowledge from the Internet. 3. Letting go of your fear of failure. Unless there is Faith (in yourself, or if you are religious, in God or a Higher power) you will never be able to put your best and learn doing it. Once you build the momentum and start taking baby steps to achieve whatever it is that you want to achieve, nothing is Difficult. Keep looking at the 3 list point — Gather motivation, Gather knowledge, Let go of your fear and take that first step. If you daily practice the 3 steps, slowly and steadily you will master whatever it was that you wanted to achieve. Whenever you feel like quitting the reason or motivation that got you started will be a reminder to continue. For my son, what motivated him eventually was the idea of going cycling with his friends. Then gathering information (from me and his mom) about cycling. And the faith he had in me that he would be able to learn cycling. It was a slow process — he fell often, bruised himself and it needed daily motivation to see his goal — but eventually he achieved it. He learnt how to cycle and I learn an important lesson on achieving Goals. Pic by Jackson Hirsch (Unsplash) As Saadi said “Have patience.
