Avantages

It's a large firm with decent benefits. Most of the attorneys are kind and respectful of staff.

Inconvénients

Over the past 5 years Rutan's management has left staff wondering who is in charge. A firm with more than 150 employees should have an HR department right? Rutan has decided to get rid of their HR department for whatever reason (money perhaps) and let the employees fend for themselves. Rutan has begun to take pennies from staff to feed their egos. Fancy office space, fancy coffee machines and soda fountains adorn. Yet during the pandemic when staff were required to set up shop in their kitchens. Upgrade wifi, make their home their office and working 24/7, the firm decided to skip the measly 2.9% percent cost of living increase in the hopes that staff would just be happy to have a job. After the numbers came in for 2020, staff and attorneys far exceed expected income. The firm decided to ignore the fact that without staff doing an amazing job the numbers would have been a lot different.

Avantages

Staff are super nice people

Inconvénients

Support evaporated after first few days. No one goes into office or answers phones or emails on Fridays (work from home, in theory), so there’s really no one to help. Unreasonable expectations on how fast one should be “up to speed” considering the above. O/T is expected in the first 3 months to get up to speed, however, just because you’re doing OT doesn’t mean anyone else who you need help from is. No other law firm I’ve worked at wanted to pay OT unless they could bill it. Date gatekeeping on deadlines, you just go with what is thrown at you that day despite deadlines being weeks away. Ridiculous. So many red flags- no breaks on the first day of orientation other than lunch. Not very good vacation time (10 days- even other law firms offer 15), no 401(k) for first year. Legal secretary doing paralegal level work for lower pay.
