Avantages

Getting to work with children and their communities

Inconvénients

Suspect finance practices, involving a great deal of obfuscation to hide employees' true income. I was on less than minimum wage for two months (when I should have had pay parity) and when I pushed back about it I had to argue separately with them for every detail of backpay as they willfully ignored most of it when presented all at once. They profit off the generosity and exhaustion of their staff, who want to do right by the children and don't know their rights.

Avantages

Good for people trying to get a permanent role in teaching or trying to gain experience in different school environments. Flexibility if you’re a uni student or looking for another job. Consultants can be understanding of your circumstances and will try to accommodate your time off requests but ultimately the attitude towards all the negatives is to deal with it. Working with other TAs that are in this struggle together.

Inconvénients

You get called up at 7am in the morning by that time you have to be awake and ready regardless if you have a shift today or not so that you can rush to make it to the school in time. Very poor pay, not a stable source of income and even though you work freelance/for an agency, time off is frowned upon by schools which may result in your booking cancellation. Schools want flexibility but won’t provide the same courtesy to you.
