Presentation: Strictly timed (10 minutes per presentation). Straightforward questions in the end
Interview: The interview was designed specifically to support their internal candidate. Most of the questions were straightforward and easy. However, a significant part of the interview focused on faculty-related questions. I am not talking about teaching-related questions (e.g., assessment, delivery, etc.) which is what you normally expect in interviews for a Lecturing post. I am talking about questions related to what makes a faculty member, which unless you had prior faculty experience there was no way to answer them. Of course, even if you had faculty experience there was no way to answer the questions as good as the internal candidate as s/he would tell them exactly what they wanted to hear. These questions come out of nowhere as the Job Description (JD) did not indicate that prior faculty experience in a University was required. In fact, the JD labelled teaching experience desirable. Also, and curiously, none of the external candidates had faculty experience. Candidates were either from the Industry or with a Post-doc background. Finally, their internal candidate did not attend the day of the interview in person. I heard that someone was interviewed on Skype, but it is unknown if it was an internal or external candidate. Finally, during the interview process, the panel interrupted me so much that it was difficult to put my thoughts together. I did not expect this kind of treatment from a University as reputable as Kent. I am still wondering if they properly reviewed the CVs of the candidates prior calling them for an interview. Also, why the JD did not clearly indicate that prior faculty experience in a University was required? Then, how did the panel treated external candidates with fairness by asking so highly subjective questions? Where was the objectivity in the interview process? I understand schools are required to invite a certain number of people in the interview, but I am sure there are better ways to promote someone than fake interviews. It's a humiliating practice that I have seen more than once in the past. It makes your tired both psychologically and financially. I don't know about other schools of the University but unless you want to waste your time don't apply for any academic positions in the particular school.
