Our Corporate Social Responsibility practices and policies are designed to help Ciena operate as a supplier of choice, an employer of choice, and a neighbor of choice around the globe.
Our commitment to corporate social responsibility is incorporated into our business through the processes and procedures we follow in our operations, the ethical policies we enforce in our workplace, and the support we provide to the communities where we operate.
At the local level, we encourage our employees to get involved in their communities by supporting schools, food banks, and emergency relief programs and by participating in events such as blood drives, food collection drives, and charity races and golf tournaments that benefit local, national, and international organizations.
Ciena’s commitment to the communities where we live and work can be summed up with one simple statement: Ciena Cares. We care about our neighbors, our customers, our industry, and our current and future employees. Under the umbrella of Ciena Cares, our community support and involvement activities fall into three primary areas:
Ciena Cares supports a variety of national and international charities at the corporate level, such as The United Way and The Prince’s Trust. We also match employees’ charitable donations from $25 up to $500 (USD, or local equivalent) to eligible non-profit organizations, and make corporate-level donations in support of fundraising programs for assistance and disaster relief campaigns.
Ciena Cares provides in-kind donations and organizes team volunteer events for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education with local schools from primary grades through college and university, as well as foundations and non-profit organizations focused on education.
Gender Diversity at Ciena
As part of our commitment to Ciena’s Corporate Social Responsibility we want to foster an inclusive environment that values and respects all individual’s strengths, perspectives, ideas, and ability to meet the needs of our customers globally.
Women@Ciena is the overarching initiative that encourages gender diversity. It does this by encouraging women to take the steps necessary to make the most of their careers; from onboarding new talent, coaching and mentoring to career planning, development and progression, as well as helping women reach the executive level.
Mission statement for Women@Ciena
To establish a Ciena culture that cultivates, inspires, and rewards the contribution of every individual no matter what sex, race, religion or otherwise. Through active awareness, we are creating an environment that attracts, develops, and retains more women in our workforce. Ultimately, our goal is to create an understanding about the value of each individual, to break down barriers that exist, and empower the voice and talents of women in our workforce.
Global Women’s Council
As part of Women@Ciena we have a Global Women’s Council which is comprised of women and men from across the organization – all levels, regions and disciplines – to ensure a genuine cross-section of talent and insights. The council’s aim is to grow the company’s diversity program globally, with local action in each of the regions in which we operate.
It involves the creation of smaller, regional groups to meet once a quarter as a ‘diversity team’ to share activities and develop new best practices as a grassroots program. The Global Women’s Council leaders initiate a local projects or initiatives every quarter as well as connect, communicate and participate with the other regional councils as a wider, global team.
Women@Ciena Communications and Research
Hosted on Ciena’s Intranet are resources for everyone to learn more about the aims of Women@Ciena and read news updates about gender diversity, recent successes and opportunities within the organization. Ciena also recently completed a Career Navigation Survey in partnership with YSC to gain a deep understanding of the drivers and barriers to success in Ciena for women (and men) which will provide relevant, practical, robust and systematic recommendations to address the successes, opportunities and risks to improve our gender balance.

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 2 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien à Ciena (Ottawa, ON) en décembre 2017.
I applied online to several positions and got an interview after 2 weeks. The interview was on the phone with 3 managers from different software teams. The interview was about an hour. All three managers asked technical questions related to the skills I put on my resume.
