Entretien

I applied online and was taken through an online questionnaire which is really simple. From there you can ‘quick apply’ to loads of jobs that Next have on in various stores. I was then called about a week later to discuss the position and when I would be available for a telephone interview. The telephone interview was simple (questions stated below) I was then invited to a face to face interview a few days later. The face to face interview included around 30 minutes on the shop floor and also a role play with the interviewer. They just want to see if you’re comfortable interacting with customers and they don’t mind if you don’t know all the answers. I actually wasn’t given any formal questions during the face to face interview but instead I had to watch 2 short clips of people working on the shop floor and pick out what was wrong and what was good about how they were working. They offered me the role on the spot and were extremely kind and friendly throughout the whole process.

Applied online on the next careers page. Had to do basic verbal and mathematic reasoning before having a personality quiz to see if you are "a good match" to the store. This then stands on your account for any roles you apply for within the company. Got rejected from one post after being receiving an email saying I'd been shortlisted but applied to another and got a call/ phone interview the next day. Was asked a few standard questions that you'd expect and was invited to a trial shift or "team assessment" straight after the weekend. This lasted just over an hour and involved being introduced to tills and serving some customers, working on the shop floor and greeting customers and also a 20 minute stint on delivery. Didn't get to know how it had gone on the day but got an email two days later telling me I had been offered the position and details for my induction and first shift :)

Applied online, application process was fast although nowhere to describe yourself, and your achievements, no cv uploaded or cover letter. They ask you to do a math/English quiz first which is very easy and stage 2 they basically judge you off what answers you pick when they ask you to rate yourself and your qualities, and to be very truthful about it. I received a email from next the morning after to hear that my application has been refused, unless someone has already filled the position, my opinion of that method is quite unfair.

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris une semaine. J'ai passé un entretien à next (Sheffield, Angleterre (Royaume-Uni)) en novembre 2016.

    Entretien

Applied online, shortlisted, received phone call, attended team assessment.

With regard to the actual interview process Next were quick, easy and pretty clear.
BUT. As soon as I arrived for my team assessment it went downhill. I arrived 15 minutes early. I did as was advised in the interview confirmation email; I approached a member of staff and told them I had arrived for my assessment. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about and handed me over to someone else. I was taken to sign in and the told to sit in the staff room as "someone would come and get me".
About 20 people passed in and out of that room while I was in there, and not a single person asked who I was or why I was there. I'm assuming that was because it's a massive store (300 staff) and everyone was used to seeing people they don't recognise. From what the staff were saying to each other their shifts had been cut, the store was short staffed and Next were bringing in temps because they cost less.
It came to my interview time and still no one had come to get me. I called the number on the email and was told "oh no one told me you were here". I was then taken to the shop floor so they could see how I interacted with customers. Nothing was explained to me and I had only a vague idea where anything was. It was quiet so I spoke to probably 10 people in the 15 minutes, only 2 wanted help, and tidied as I wandered around. The manager then said she wasn't satisfied with how busy it was so took me to the changing rooms. 3 people came in whilst I was there (again for about 15 minutes).
I was then taken back to an office for feedback. They said I was very polite and helpful but didn't have the "jazz hands" they wanted. She then offered me a Christmas temp position. I'm assuming I was offered the Christmas temp position because they're trying to bring in temps and could just get rid of me after Christmas.. probably for lack of jazz hands.

Maybe this experience sounds normal to people that have worked in similar stores, however I just couldn't get past that no one seemed to know their colleagues even in the same section of the shop. I declined the Christmas temp offer because I would have to work Boxing Day and could not see myself leaving my family early on Christmas Day to travel back to Sheffield and work in shop where no one knows each other (I specifically didn't apply for that position in the first place for that reason).
