    Entretien de Software Engineer

Employé anonyme - San Francisco, CA (États-Unis)
    Offre d'embauche acceptée
    Expérience positive
    Difficulté moyenne

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. J'ai passé un entretien à Xero (San Francisco, CA (États-Unis)) en janvier 2015.

    Entretien

Standard interview process, you'll be given a problem to solve online within 45 min, then follow-up with a technical phone call. If you impress the interviewers, you'll be invited to onsite interviews.

Onsite interviews will cover both algorithms, problem-solving, design, database, and culture-fit.

    My advice:

Algorithms: The questions will most likely be standard but take note of the importance in writing clean code and test your implementation. You are expected to know Big-O notation, common data structures (hash table/dictionary, tree, stack, queue, arrays, list) and the interviewer would be impressed if you can point out the reason why you pick such algorithms or data structure.

Design: Focus on solving real life problem using proper OOP. Define the classes, inheritance structure, the interfaces, and implementation clearly upfront. You don't have to know every design patterns but know the most common one won't hurt (Singleton, Strategy, Template Method, Bridge ..etc). Design for reusability and maintainability. Always ask questions to clarify the intent of the design exercise.

Database question: Depending on your role, if front-end engineer then you may not need to go through this step. For backend engineer, you're expected to write proper SQL, able to design tables with properly E-R, understand cardinality (1-to-1, 1-to-many, many-to-many), aggregations. Some advanced questions may be about LOCKs, INDEXES, CTE.

Always draw your ERD first, identify the columns of each table, write your SQL with such ERD then fine-tune them.

Culture-fit: In general this session is to evaluate whether you are smart, you are fun and you are friendly to work with? Be sincere and professional, explain how you would solve a conflict, show that you are proactive and a valuable asset to the team.

I applied online and got an email from HR asking me to take the coding challenge. I took the coding challenge and next day got a reply from HR that I did a good job. HR then asked me if I need sponsorship for OPT. (I am an international student who will graduate in December in 2018 so I need sponsorship) I said yes but I got a reply saying they will not accept OPT candidates. It was really disappointing because I had done well in coding challenge and was hoping I will get an interview call for next round.

    Coding challenge:
It had 6 questions in total. First 4 were multiple choice - which will test your language skills. They will mostly be like: What is the output of this code snippet, Java / C# internals etc.
Next two questions were coding questions:

I applied through the company website for the position of a software engineer. Next I got a call from one of the HR officers in the organization. This was a very cool process where I had to explain my technological skills and the recent Masters in Computer Science qualification. Next I had an in person interview which was like talking general concepts like what courses i covered during my masters and what sort of projects are completed by me.

    Entretien de Software Engineer Lead

    Candidat à l'entretien anonyme - San Francisco, CA (États-Unis)
    Offres d'embauche déclinées
    Expérience négative
    Difficulté moyenne

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris +4 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien à Xero (San Francisco, CA (États-Unis)) en novembre 2018.

    Entretien

I had applied to "Lead Software Engineer" and "Sr. Software Engineer" positions. The recruiter reached out over phone saying the team was very excited with my resume and wanted to bring me straight onsite for the in-person rounds (bypassing any tech-screens). He confirmed this was for the lead software engineer role

This did sound unusual but my profile has the rare combination of these aspects:
    - 12+ years of software development experience.
    - proficient in C#, .NET stack (they use this stack)
    - Certified AWS Solution Architect (they use AWS for their cloud provider)
    - Currently developing "Account Reconciliation" with one of the largest fin-tech companies around.
     - Local to SF bay-area (where the position was).

Shortly after, I got an email from the scheduler saying "Congratulations on being selected for an interview with Xero for the role of Lead Software Engineer."

Three days before the interview, I get an automated email saying:
"We regret to advise that at this time we won't be moving forward with your application for this particular role, however we will keep your details on file. "

When I reached out to the recruiter, he said that I was never in consideration for "lead" and that the upcoming interview would be for "Sr. Software Engineer". I reluctantly agreed to go through with the interview.

On the day of the interview, the entire interview panel sat in on my very first round which was a system design round where they asked me to design a popular non-software system. As they poked holes in my design, I evolved the design to plug that hole. That question is a cliche "out of college" question which has nothing to do with software or distributed systems.

Post lunch one of their senior engineers and a lead developer came in with a laptop, started HackerRank, selected "Hard" difficulty level, and asked me to pick a problem of my choice.

We read through the couple-paragraph-long problem statement together. I designed the algorithm to solve this all by myself in the next few minutes on the whiteboard.

They however, wanted to see it coded and all HackerRank tests passing.
This exercise went a little slow since I was typing on an unfamiliar PC laptop (I had been using a MacBook over the last few years). Also, HackerRank forces to spend time on marshaling input and output data before you can attack the core of the problem.

For the last round, I felt very rushed by other folks peeping inside the interview room and the interviewer checking the clock multiple times.

A couple of days went by and then the recruiter called again. offering me a position - of Software Engineer (not Senior or Lead). The compensation offered was 70K LESS than what I was already making.

This was my first onsite after having decided to start job hunting and the demeaning offer completely dented my confidence for a few weeks at least.

Took me another couple of months, to start getting offers that were more respectful of my experience and skill level. I debated with myself whether or not I should spend my time and attention to write this review. I would not have but did it anyway, hoping to save the time and effort of other engineers who are considering interviewing at Xero.

I had applied online and was contact within two days. I was had done an initial interview with the recruiter, then a Skype interview with the director of IT in New Zealand and then an onsite panel interview at the downtown San Francisco Office. Most questions were not heavily based on technical knowledge but more about the ability to handle a workload and being a sole offsite technical support member.

The company did not provide feedback on interview and waited over 3 weeks to contact me regarding going another direction.

Quick; the company seems quite full of themselves and there is not a lot of room for new ideas. They talked a lot about perks but it was difficult to understand the current opportunity. It seemed that the hiring manager did not leave room to learn how candidates had been successful in a similar position somewhere else.

Started with an HR phone screening which was fine, then spoke with the Marketing lead via Skype which was also fine. The Denver office was a bit strange. First, upon arrival there was no one at the front desk, so I had to walk around and find someone to help me. The entire office was in disarray. People riding scooters around, throwing things, drinking...weird. The interview was super awkward. One employee was there in person, and the other via call. The employee dialing in was distracting. He said he was making coffee in his hotel room. There was a lot of background noise. The person there in-person was completely lifeless. Was like talking to a wall. Overall, just a weird experience. Did not receive an offer, but if I did I would have declined.
