Their process is insulting.
First, it took over a month to even be contacted after applying.
Then, there was live coderpad nonsense, followed by a redundant take-home project. I'll give them credit that the code is reviewed anonymously in an attempt to remove bias, but the other side of that coin is that they are going to be biased in favor of engineers who don't challenge their existing conventions; they don't even pretend this isn't the case, it's explicitly mentioned in the instructions for the problem.
There is no feedback given nor any opportunity to address that feedback....you know, how normal engineers would function and iterate over a design?
I'm honestly a bit relieved that's as far as I got, as I learned from their site after submitting my code that I would have had multiple hours of whiteboarding interviews to look forward to (with yet more live coding in front of other engineers, the least accurate way possible to gauge someone's proficiency).
As if that weren't a big enough waste of time (even Amazon, who originated the practice, doesn't use it anymore), it would be in person in Seattle, adding several days lost to travel as the cherry on top of the crap sundae.
I had withdrawn my application last year upon learning about the use of live coding and whiteboard interviews. Would that I had stuck to my gut this time around and saved myself a great deal of time and energy.
Similarly, I should have stopped to ask why they were hiring for the same position again a year later. Their team hasn't grown since then, it seems like they have a great deal of turnover (which is borne out in the reviews if you search for the word "turnover").
The entire process felt like someone who worked for one of the Big Five a decade ago is now in charge of hiring here. I guess this works if you want to hire clones of yourself, but not if you want a diverse team.
Lastly, they pay significantly less based on your location. This is discriminatory, full stop. Lesson learned, don't let the state of the job market in 2023 negate my instincts which were evidently spot on with this place.
