The process was slow but overall pleasant. There were three parts: 1. First interview was rather short and it was with HR. Mainly to schedule the technical interview. 2. Technical interview using Zoom for video conferencing. They reserved a good portion of the interview for technical questions, but also about 15-20 minutes of soft skills questions (e.g. behavioral and situation questions). The interview went on for about 1.5 hours. 3. I was shortlisted for a final interview (Zoom again) where I met the team I would be working with. This interview was for cultural fit. I was asked questions about the workplace and about my interests. I was also able to ask more of my own questions. There were no technical assessments (e.g. no whiteboard coding, not algorithmic problems assessment). In the end I was unfortunately rejected. The whole process took 2 months from application to rejection. The HR Manager did personally call me to tell me I didn't get the job (as opposed to sending an email), so I thought that was nice.

The initial phone interview, which I had a few days after submitting my online application, was fairly routine. It was with an HR representative who asked the standard questions, e.g., do you have work experience in a particular skill and for how long. After confirming that I seemed a good fit, I was then invited to a panel interview that took place three weeks later. The panel consisted of three people: two managers -- one of whom would be my future supervisor were I to be hired and another with whom I would work quite closely -- as well as the HR rep that I spoke to on the phone. Overall, the questions that they asked were all again quite standard, clearly assessing my ability to do the work required for the job. I didn't have any strong feelings either way about how the interview went, but I didn't think that I performed poorly at all. From the start to the end of the interview, the HR rep was very respectful and courteous and told me that I would hear back from them within a few days. After a week had passed, I called and left a voicemail message with the HR rep and also sent an email to them, very politely requesting a status update. My communications were met with a deafening silence. It's one thing to not receive a response after applying to a job posting either by email or online form. It's something very different when the employer has gone to the trouble to speak to you on the phone, then invite you to an interview, spend over an hour speaking with you -- only to completely ghost you without so much as providing any kind of response. It would have been completely fine for me to be told that I wasn't selected and that they had moved on with another candidate. That would have been the right thing to do. Instead, the Richmond School District made a mockery of the hiring process with such unprofessional and disrespectful conduct.

There was a phone call or email (I forgot which since I am writing this for 3 years ago). Then a 1 hour test at their head office, which was comprised of vocabulary, basic math, grammar, and typing. Once you pass the test, there was a face-to-face interview with a Human Resources manager. This may have changed by now, but this was back in Winter 2014.
